Full Job Description
The City of Norfolk is seeking a Multimedia Communications Specialist for The Slover. This position assists the Manager of Visitor Marketing through a variety of media formats, including but not limited to print, web, social media, photography, and video to promote The Slover and its public offerings. Assists with promoting programs and events. Performs special projects. Performs a variety of administrative, financial, and budgetary.
The Slover is a premier destination located in downtown Norfolk that contains a branch of the Norfolk Public Library system, the Sargeant Memorial Collection Archives, the Roy E. Hendrix Business center, Creative Studios, Venue Rentals, and a Café. The Slover encompasses three centuries of architecture which spans 138,000 square feet across seven floors. The City of Norfolk is a permanent Carnival cruise hub welcoming 150,000 guests a year. At just two blocks from the hub, The Slover is a destination for visitation, information, and activities for tourists in addition to our robust visitation from residents.
Requirements
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
- Creates original content (video, photography, social media, website, etc.) which promotes and informs city services. Writes and create visuals that are appropriate for various city-owned platforms, including social media, and websites.
- Liaison to various city departments, supports special events, works collaboratively with the Communications team.
- Promote programs and agendas by responding to inquiries from media, writing occasional press releases, presentations, and public service announcements, updating the website, and submitting daily program information.
Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $54,190.94-$58,050.69
Qualifications
Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
1 year experience in communications or related field
Preferred Education/Experience:- Advanced experience with media monitoring practices such as capturing initial impressions of a campaign across multiple media platforms, as well as media analytics such as gathering and analyzing data over time for the purpose of evaluating the effectiveness of communication strategies and informing future decision making.
- Advanced experience with digital content management practices such as creating and maintaining tailored content on an organization's website, social media, and other digital platforms for the purpose of informing, educating, and empowering internal and external stakeholders.
- Basic experience with Adobe Creative Cloud software applications such as InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator
- Ability to read correspondence, publications, reports, legal documents, and promotional materials.
- Prioritizing work to meet deadlines. Prepare neat and thorough documents and monthly reports.

Work Hours:
This position is 40 hours per week. Workdays and hours will vary depending on organizational needs. The facility will be open Monday-Sunday 9 a.m.-7 p.m. This position will require flexibility to work weekend and evening schedules.
