Job Description

Summary

This seasonal job with the National Park Service involves driving various trucks and vehicles to transport people, supplies, and equipment across urban and rural areas, including rough terrain, while also handling basic maintenance and cleaning tasks.

  • Reliability and dependability as a motor vehicle operator
  • Pass a pre-employment drug test and submit to random drug testing
  • Ability to interpret instructions and specifications related to mobile equipment operation
  • Experience with routine preventative maintenance, such as checking fluids and air pressure

Full Job Description

These positions are located within National Capital Parks - East. Positions are located in Suitland, MD and Greenbelt, MD. Duty stations will be negotiated upon selection.

The primary purpose of the position is to operate one or more motor vehicles. Open to the first 100 applicants or until 02/27/2026 whichever comes first.

(related to mobile equipment operation) Ability to Operate Safely (Non-Motor Vehicle) Operation of Motor Vehicles Work Practices (including keeping things neat, clean and in order) Reliability and Dependability as a Motor Vehicle Operator Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration.

Selective Placement Factor (SCREEN OUT): You must possess and maintain a current Class B (or higher) Commercial Driver's License with air break endorsement.

AND; You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:

The major duties of the position Motor Vehicle Operator include, but are not limited to, the following: Operate motor vehicles including platform trucks, van trucks, stake trucks, dump trucks, specialty pumping equipment and trash.

Drive vehicles over public roads at highway speeds to transport passengers, supplies, materials or equipment and tools or to tow equipment throughout rural and urban areas.

Operate vehicles over rough terrain, in close quarters and in heavy traffic on both long and short hauls.

Perform routine preventative maintenance such as checking and adding fluids to bring to proper levels, checking air pressure and adding when required.

Perform semi-skilled and unskilled maintenance, repair and janitorial work in and on various unit buildings.
