Join the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) in supporting the Motor Carrier Services Team as an Administrative Support Assistant 3.

The dedicated employees provide professional, high-quality customer service to meet our customers' needs.

This position focuses on addressing the customer service requirements of the Office of Motor Carrier Services.


The Motor Carrier Services team oversees eight key program areas, including:

- International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA)

- International Registration Plan (IRP)

- Unified Carrier Registration (UCR)

- Intrastate Authority

- Transportation Network Companies (TNC)

- Transit Fuel

- Titling of commercial vehicles

- Oversize/Overweight Permitting

Shift: Monday to Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, 40 hours per week


Location: Customer Service Bureau, Motor Vehicle Division, Ankeny, Iowa 50021


What skills you will need to succeed in this position:


  • Ability to review applications for accuracy based on established laws, rules, and procedures
  • Solid data entry and computer skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Experience communicating clearly and concisely with customers in person and through phone, e-mails, and business letters.


Some of the essential functions of this role include the following:

  • Reviewing and processing applications and change requests for the eight Motor Carrier programs.
  • Researching, reviewing, analyzing, and understanding complex state administrative rules, state and federal statutes, and regulations to determine required action.
  • Compiling, creating, and maintaining records and completing reports.
  • Communicating with internal and external customers to provide polite, quality, professional customer service via correspondence, in person, and over the phone.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
  1. Two years of full-time work experience in general office, clerical, data entry/processing, or related work.
  2. A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in any field equals one year of full-time experience.
  3. Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes six months of full-time work as an Administrative Support Assistant 2 or eighteen months of full-time work as an Administrative Support Assistant 1.
