This job involves driving large vehicles like buses and vans to transport patients and staff to and from VA medical centers and other locations, following set routes or special trips, while also doing basic vehicle checks and repairs.
It requires safely handling patients in wheelchairs or on stretchers, often in tough weather or traffic.

The purpose of this position is to operate patient and personnel transport vehicles, passenger buses, wheelchair transport vans, dual utility vehicles, and other vehicles with a gross weight greater than 26,001 pounds, to and from VA Medical Center facilities, private healthcare facilities, and other locations on and off station.
The employee will drive predetermined and/or scheduled routes or special runs and perform minor repairs and maintenance checks as needed.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.
Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.
Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.

Physical Requirements: Extensive physical effort includes pushing and pulling wheelchairs and stretcher patients for loading and unloading.
May be required to lift patients from wheelchairs into vehicles; with assistance, carry wheelchair patients up and down stairs, steady patients when walking, and lift litters in and out of patient transport vehicles.

Working Conditions: Employee will be exposed to congested traffic conditions, unsafe roads due to torrential rains, vehicle exhaust fumes, and airborne particles.

Required to work outside and is exposed to summer heat, winter cold, wind and rain when loading and unloading patients or cargo.
Must also wear any required personal protective equipment (PPE), which may include eye protection, gloves, safety footwear, and respiratory protection, depending on the task and environment.
While most work is conducted outside, minimal time may also be spent indoors in an office setting to complete required documentation and administrative tasks. Major Duties:
Duties include, but are not limited to: Coordinate with Transportation section and/or Fleet Manager and scheduling daily motor pool assignments, procedures and schedules from either the Transportation Coordinator and/or the Fleet Manager.
Operate a variety of motor vehicles with load capacities up to 2.5 tons and large passenger buses. Read maps, use GPS devices, and obtain vehicle route information from commercial map databases.
Transport ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients, passengers, freight and linen on and off station.
Transport employees within Medical Center grounds and for special events using small and large passenger buses. Assist patients in and out of vehicles, places, medical equipment with care.
Perform operator maintenance such as checking fluid levels and air pressure in tires, cleaning and washing of vehicles.
Maintain records and document actions, such as operator inspection checklists/forms and accident/incident reports.
Possess and maintain valid Florida State Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger (P) endorsement and air brakes endorsement is required for the position.
Must have or obtain within 30 days of entry on duty, a basic CPR (Basic Life Support) certification. Performs other related duties as assigned.
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
