Full Job Description

This position is responsible for providing autopsy assistance and decedent transport assistance from the death scene and hospitals to the office for the examinations to take place by the forensic pathologist as required by Coroner law, for those who die in Marion County. Incumbent must exercise independent judgment in the performance of their duties and receive minimal supervision. Independent judgment must be exercised with preparing the decedent body for the forensic autopsy. This position reports to the Forensic Autopsy Technician Supervisor.

The purpose and mission of the Marion County Coroner’s agency is to investigate and determine a person’s cause and manner of death, particularly in cases when the individual died under unusual circumstances.

The office consoles families, advocates for the deceased, and gives information to police and courts to prosecute suspected criminals.

Requirements

  • Assist in removal and transporting decedents from death scene investigations and from hospitals to the office where autopsies or external exams will take place.
  • Assist autopsy technicians with releasing decedents to funeral homes, and cleaning the autopsy suite following examinations.
  • Performs diagnostic imaging and x-rays to locate evidence or injuries inside the body in preparation for the autopsy
  • Maintain knowledge of departmental procedures and policies including quality improvement, infection control standards, environmental standards and safety issues
  • Maintain knowledge of preparation of evidence for chain of custody control
  • Maintains confidentiality at all times

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required and one (1) year of experience in mortuary services, hospital transport, or related field. Must possess a valid Driver’s License.

The position is required to learn and understand death investigations and forensic autopsies as it relates to Indiana Coroner law.

Must understand medical terminology, body anatomy, and the importance of national standards related to forensic standards in forensic autopsies. Must be able to communicate effectively with others.


Preferred Job Requirements and Qualifications

An associate degree in related health care or forensic field is preferred.
