Summary

This job involves reviewing military pay documents, processing entitlements, and providing guidance on pay and benefits to service members and Army units.

A good fit would be someone detail-oriented with experience in financial or administrative tasks, who enjoys helping solve payment issues in a structured military environment.

Entry-level candidates with relevant education or office skills can qualify for the starting grade.

  • For GS-07: One year specialized experience at GS-06 level including analysis, investigations, and research on complex pay issues, or related graduate education, or combination

Full Job Description

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce positions of the to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: As a Military Pay Technician you will perform comprehensive review of military pay documents, forms, orders, and vouchers for service members.

You will provide military entitlements, pay, and benefits guidance and support to multiple individuals and organizations.

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

OR Education: Completion of four years above high school. (This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school).

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60.

Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.

Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.

One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.

GS-06 Specialized experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service which includes: Performing comprehensive reviews of military pay documents, reviewing forms, orders, and vouchers for service members; receiving and resolving problem cases involving over payment or under payment; AND providing military entitlements, pay and benefits technical guidance to Soldiers, Units, and Army Finance Offices.

OR Education: Completion of graduate education in a field directly related to the work of the position.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12.

Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.

GS-07 Specialized experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service which includes: Performing comprehensive reviews of military pay documents, review forms, orders, and vouchers for service members; receiving and resolving problem cases involving over payment or under payment; performing analysis, conducting investigations and performing research to settle complicated and problematic situations affecting benefits and entitlements; AND providing military entitlements, pay and benefits technical guidance to Soldiers, Units, and Army Finance Offices.

OR Education: Completion of graduate education in a field directly related to the work of the position OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12.

Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. Major Duties:

  • Audit a variety of military pay actions to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Provide military entitlements, pay and benefits technical guidance to Soldiers, Units, and Army Finance Offices.
  • Provide assistance to personnel on all military pay inquiries.
  • Utilize various automated military pay and travel systems to review vouchers for payment.
  • Interpret data from the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) to determine and initiate the appropriate actions.
  • Provide direct service support to all deployed and non-deployed service members.
  • Process documents electronically through a variety of automated pay systems.
  • Audit pay to determine validity of over and under payment claims.
