Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading and overseeing mental health care programs in a state prison, ensuring services meet the needs of inmates while working with facility leaders to improve policies.

A good fit would be an experienced mental health professional with a master's degree and leadership skills who is passionate about providing care in a correctional setting.

Key Requirements

  • Master’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or nursing with a psychiatric specialty
  • Four years of professional post-master’s experience in mental health roles such as psychologist, clinical social worker, or nurse practitioner, focusing on mental illness or developmental disabilities
  • At least two years of experience equivalent to an experienced level (P-11) or one year at advanced level (12) in state service
  • Valid Michigan license to practice as a psychologist, social worker, counselor, or registered nurse
  • Ability to manage, supervise, and coordinate mental health services in correctional facilities
  • Experience integrating mental health services with correctional administration and policy development

Planning, management, supervision, coordination, and control of all mental health treatment located in correctional facilities within their area of control. Management functions include integration of mental health services in correctional facilities, working closely with Health Care and Correctional Facilities Administration to provide quality and flexible response to mental health needs of prisoners. Functions as a member of the Warden’s Management Team and participates/advises on procedures and policy changes.



Requirements

Education

Possession of a master’s degree with a major in psychology, social work, or counseling; or a master's degree in nursing with a clinical nurse specialty in psychiatry.

Experience

Mental Health Services Manager 13

Four years of professional post-masters experience as a Psychologist, Clinical Social Worker, Corrections Qualified Mental Health Professional, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Practitioner, or other qualified mental health professional in the areas of mental illness or developmental disabilities including two years equivalent to the experienced level (P11) or one year equivalent to the advanced level (12) in state service.

Special Requirements, Licenses, and Certifications

Possession of a Michigan license in good standing to practice within the scope of the qualified mental health profession as a psychologist, social worker, counselor, or registered nurse.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification.

All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.
