Job Description

Summary

This entry-level role involves supervising individuals on probation or parole who have mental health issues, helping them stay stable by connecting with support services and following specific guidelines.

It's ideal for someone with a background in social sciences, law enforcement, or the military who wants to work in a structured government agency focused on rehabilitation.

The position requires training to become certified and includes physical and mental fitness tests.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with at least 15 semester hours in social or behavioral sciences, or an associate's degree plus 2 years of military/certified law enforcement experience, or high school diploma plus 4 years of such experience
  • Obtain C-1 law enforcement certification from the SC Criminal Justice Academy within 1 year of hire (includes 12 weeks of training with 8-week sequestration)
  • Pass Nelson-Denny Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary test
  • Pass physical ability test (PAT)
  • Undergo background check, credit check, cybervetting, driving records check, criminal records check, drug screening, physical exam, and psychological exam
  • Maintain knowledge of mental health supervision, programs, policies, and protocols
  • Participate in ongoing trainings and maintain Mental Health Certification requirements

Under the general supervision of the Mental Health Program Manager; the specialized mental health agent will serve as the first line of supervision for a caseload consisting primarily of individuals who are living with a mental illness.

Maintain a professional communication network with internal and external stakeholders, advocate on behalf of those supervised to seek/maintain stability.

Maintain effective knowledge of all areas of mental health supervision, programs, policies and protocols. Participate in trainings and maintain all requirements for Mental Health Certification.



Requirements

A bachelor's degree with at least 15 semester hours in social or behavioral science courses; An associate’s degree and two (2) years of military or certified law enforcement experience (to include Class 1 or Offender Supervision Specialist experience) may be substituted; or a high school diploma and four (4) years of military or certified law enforcement experience (to include Class 1 or Offender Supervision Specialist experience) may be substituted.

Qualifications

In addition to meeting the minimum requirements, applicants will be required to obtain C-1 law enforcement certification by the SC Criminal Justice Academy within 1 year of employment (12 weeks which includes an 8 week sequestration at the academy).
