Job Description

Summary

This job involves supervising people on probation or parole who have mental health issues, helping them stay stable by connecting with support services and advocating for their needs.

It requires working closely with various professionals and keeping up with mental health policies and training.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, social work, psychology, sociology, or related field, including at least 15 semester hours in social or behavioral sciences
  • At least two years of experience in criminal justice, counseling, or related human services work
  • Current Class 1 (C-1) certification as a law enforcement officer from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy
  • Certification by the Law Enforcement Training Council per South Carolina Code of Laws 23-23-40
  • Experience in probation and parole work preferred
  • Ability to maintain mental health certification through ongoing training
  • Substitutions allowed: Associate's degree with two years of military or certified law enforcement experience, or high school diploma with four years of such experience

Under the general supervision of the Mental Health Program Manager; the specialized mental health agent will serve as the first line of supervision for a caseload consisting primarily of individuals who are living with a mental illness.

Maintain a professional communication network with internal and external stakeholders, advocate on behalf of those supervised to seek/maintain stability.

Maintain effective knowledge of all areas of mental health supervision, programs, policies and protocols. Participate in trainings and maintain all requirements for Mental Health Certification.





Requirements

A bachelor's degree with at least 15 semester hours in social or behavioral science courses and experience in probation and parole work. An associate’s degree and two (2) years of military or certified law enforcement experience (to include Class 1 or Offender Supervision Specialist experience) may be substituted; or a high school diploma and four (4) years of military or certified law enforcement experience (to include Class 1 or Offender Supervision Specialist experience) may be substituted.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Certification by the Law Enforcement Training Council in accordance with 23-23-40 of the Code of Laws of South Carolina 1976.


NOTE: Must be currently Class 1 (C -1) certified law enforcement officer from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, social work, psychology, sociology, education, counseling or other social behavior sciences or a bachelor’s degree, which includes at least 15 credit hours in the aforementioned disciplines and completion of two (2) years of experience in criminal justice, counseling, or related professional human service work.
