Summary

This job involves handling medical billing tasks at a military hospital, such as checking insurance claims for errors, submitting them for payment, and helping patients with billing questions.

About the Position: Serves as the Accounting Technician to the Director of Administration, providing support for all medical billing functions at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.

Permanent Change of Station (PCS)/Relocation and Living Quarters Allowance (LQA) are NOT authorized for this position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Basic Qualifications for Medical Services Account Technician (OA) GS-05 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes maintaining accounting documents; using automated billing systems to retrieve data; AND reconciling accounting transactions.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60.

Add the two percentages.

Basic Qualifications for Medical Services Account Technician (OA) GS-06 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes processing claims for approval in accordance with established procedures; utilizing automated systems to retrieve data; AND resolving discrepancies through research and /or review.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.

For this job at grade level GS-06, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Major Duties:

  • Reviews insurance claims for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with billing requirements.
  • Identifies and corrects errors to ensure proper and timely reimbursement.
  • Applies appropriate transaction and billing codes to patient accounts.
  • Submits claims to insurance companies and third-party payers in accordance with established procedures.
  • Researches and resolves patient-disputed collection issues and billing concerns.
  • Utilizes automated systems to review, track, and follow up on the status of each account associated with a claim.
  • Coordinates with the Budget Office to resolve billing discrepancies or account errors.
  • Investigates cases involving pay or reimbursement discrepancies to determine proper corrective action.
  • Provides face-to-face customer service to patients regarding account inquiries, billing questions, and payment issues.
