About the Position: The Cardiovascular Technician assists Physician(s) and team members during highly complex, potentially life-threatening invasive cardiovascular procedures on stable and unstable patients.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing work as a cardiovascular technologist (CVT) working in a cardiovascular laboratory and/or cardiac catheterization laboratory; or independently performing a variety of non-invasive cardiovascular procedures; or assisting with invasive cardiovascular procedures; and independently operating x- ray equipment.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.

For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Major Duties:

  • Serves in a multi-role (scrub; monitor; circulator; instructor; equipment, supply and budget) capacity as a Cardiovascular Medical Instrument Technician.
  • Identifies and selects patient/procedure-specific catheters, supplies, equipment, contrast medium, and volume to meet the requirements of the procedure.
  • Sets up sterile field. Monitors and ensures compliance with aseptic technique and radiation safety principles.
  • Responsible for required daily maintenance and preventive maintenance of cine processing equipment.
  • Notifies the operating cardiologists of the procedure status, the current patient condition, and other vital information that may affect the procedure.
  • Operates defibrillator and pacemaker generator as well as radiographic contrast injector, cardiac output, intravascular ultrasound, angiojet, rotablator, pressure wire, and intra-aortic balloon pump consoles.
  • Applies noninvasive cardiovascular techniques of electrocardiography (12-lead ECG) and assists with synchronized cardioversion and transcutaneous pacing.
  • Operates an interactive computerized digital subtraction angiographic system in order to produce coronary and left ventricular graphic images, and to perform pulmonary, aortic, and peripheral arterial imaging.
  • Ensures that the lab has adequate supplies for all procedures performed.
