This job involves diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of heavy equipment and trucks used for highway construction, road maintenance, and rural airports, such as graders, loaders, and dump trucks.
It requires working in shops or remote locations to keep state vehicles running safely and efficiently.

What you will be doing
Professionally maintain all heavy equipment associated with the construction and maintenance of highways, secondary roads and rural airports including, but not limited to motor graders, loaders, dump trucks, roller compactors, sand spreaders, backhoes, and tractor-trailer combinations.
This is an advanced journey level mechanic position required to diagnose, repair and maintain a wide variety of heavy trucks and equipment for the State Fleet.
This includes computerized diagnostics and the ability to repair electronic and mechanical systems.
The incumbent must be able to resolve unusual or complex equipment problems through a variety of techniques and methods.
In a shop or remote setting, the incumbent performs routine and specialized repair and maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment with diverse components and diagnostic requirements.
An example of equipment would be motor graders, loaders, trucks of all types, snow blowers, and sanders, often from different manufacturers and a wide range of model years.
The incumbent is required to have a base working knowledge of the equipment components in order to move or operate the equipment for service and have the ability to correctly diagnose problems not specified in applicable programs.

The working environment you can expect
This position is at MP 3.5 Nome-Teller Road, Nome, AK.
Some travel in small planes to maintain equipment in remote locations is possible in this position. Travel consists of day trips and overnight stays.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED AT TIME OF INTERVIEW:
COMMERCIAL DRIVER’S LICENSE REQUIRED
This position requires the incumbent to possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383), to register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety sensitive duties, and to provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.
A Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for this position.
A conditional hire approval can be given to applicants that do not yet possess a Class A CDL. This means that the proposed appointee must successfully obtain a Class A CDL within 120 days of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION & PUBLIC FACILITIES DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICYSelected candidates must comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and procedures and CANNOT start work in a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) position until Management Services or designee has received confirmation of the proposed appointee passing the required Pre-Employment drug test.
According to federal regulations, all violations and refusals will be maintained with the Federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse database.
TOOL ALLOWANCEEmployees in this position are required to provide their own hand tools. Employees in this position will be paid a bi-weekly tool allowance as determined by LTC contract.
