What you will be doing:

In Thompson Pass—one of Alaska’s most extreme, record-breaking snow zones—you’ll operate heavy equipment to keep the highway open and safe through intense winter storms and demanding summer operations.

You’ll run plow trucks, graders, loaders, dozers, snow blowers, and belly dumps; haul materials for asphalt and gravel work; assist with avalanche response; and perform basic maintenance, equipment repairs, and MMS reporting as needed.

This is hands-on, high-impact work where skilled operators keep Alaska moving in some of the toughest conditions in the state.

This position is located in Thompson Pass, Alaska.


This position is based out of the Fairbanks Northern Region hub, working alongside experienced maintenance crews from districts across Northern Alaska. Most days, you’ll head out to job sites around the Fairbanks area with a dedicated team focused on keeping Alaska’s roadways safe and moving.

COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIRED
This position requires the incumbent to possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383), to register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety sensitive duties, and to provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.

A Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker endorsement is required for this position. A conditional hire approval can be given to applicants that do not have Tanker Endorsement.

This means that the proposed appointee must successfully obtain Tanker Endorsement within 90 days of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.

  • Management may require incumbent to obtain a HazMat but is not required at time of appointment.
  • DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION & PUBLIC FACILITIES DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICYSelected candidates must comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and procedures and CANNOT start work in a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) position until Management Services or designee has received confirmation of the proposed appointee passing the required Pre-Employment drug test.

    According to federal regulations, all violations and refusals will be maintained with the Federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse database.


    ARMS & AMMUNITION REQUIREMENTThis position requires the use of firearm or ammunition.

    If you have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence you may not hold a position in this job class in accordance with the Federal Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act of 1997 (PL-104-208).
