Job Description

Summary

This job involves working as a mechanical engineer at a naval shipyard, supporting and maintaining mechanical systems for ships, ensuring safety and efficiency during repairs and operations.

You'll review plans, coordinate installations and tests, and solve complex problems to keep everything running smoothly.

It's a great fit for experienced engineers who enjoy hands-on technical work in a military or industrial setting, especially those with a background in ship or heavy machinery support.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience at GS-11 level or equivalent, including waterfront support for mechanical systems
  • Knowledge of ship's systems, shipyard infrastructure, NAVFAC assets, industry standards, and Code of Federal Regulations
  • Experience reviewing engineering work to ensure compliance with technical specifications, principles, and configuration controls
  • Proficiency in coordinating installation, removal, repair, fabrication, and testing of mechanical support systems
  • Familiarity with mechanical engineering concepts for designing, evaluating, and troubleshooting shipboard support systems
  • Ability to modify and upgrade complex mechanical systems while ensuring reactor, ship, and personnel safety
  • Basic requirements for mechanical engineering series (e.g., bachelor's degree in engineering or related field)

GS-12 In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of Specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: * Experience providing waterfront support for temporary mechanical support systems and services, non-nuclear interface mechanical support systems and services, and waterfront production mechanical support systems and services.

* Experience with ship's systems, shipyard infrastructure, NAVFAC assets, industry standards, and the Code of Federal Regulations.

* Experience providing engineering review of work planned, in progress and completed to ensure invoked technical specifications, engineering principals, and configuration controls are met.

* Experience coordinating all installation, removal, repair, fabrication, and testing on assigned mechanical support systems and services.

GS-11 In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of Specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: * Experience with mechanical engineering concepts, principles and practices applicable to the full range of engineering duties concerned with the design, layout and evaluation of mechanical support systems and services supporting shipboard work.

* Experience working with mechanical temporary systems and services that support Reactor safety, Ship Safety and personnel safety.

* Experience troubleshooting mechanical equipment and recommending repairs, replacements, modifications, and operational changes.

* Experience modifying and upgrading mechanical support systems and services that are complex, sophisticated, intertwined with numerous other systems and services.

  • You will exercise Engineer creativity and sound judgment modifying traditional techniques or developing new ones to solve complex problems.
  • You will be responsible for creating a safe and efficient worksite, and preventing or responding to a major casualty.
  • You will write and review job summaries, technical work documents, status reports, technical reports, correspondences, and milestones
  • You will provide support to other codes and shops and assists with shop/shipboard tests on mechanical support systems and services.
