This job involves maintaining and repairing city vehicles and equipment, such as performing routine oil changes, diagnosing issues, and fixing or rebuilding parts to keep the fleet running smoothly.
A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience in vehicle mechanics who enjoys working with tools, can handle physical tasks in various weather conditions, and is reliable for flexible shifts including weekends and evenings.

The mission of the Fleet Management Department is to provide the City of Houston with best value, fleet management services.
To accomplish Fleet's mission and our vision of being recognized as the best managed fleet in the country, we are actively seeking a MECHANIC II who thrives in performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs of moderate complexity to City vehicles and equipment.
The Mechanic II is a Tier 1 position and can make an immediate impact and add value towards the achievement of these goals.
The MECHANIC II duties will include but is not limited to:
The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time.
There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold moisture, air pollution, chemical gases, and substances.
The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises, and minor burns. Must furnish own hand tools.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
High school degree of GED equivalent.
Two years’ experience of automotive, diesel and/or heavy-equipment maintenance/repair experience is required or two years of full-time, secondary vocational education in automotive, diesel, and/or heavy equipment (off road) technology.
Preference will be given to applicants with heavy-duty diesel and welding experience highly preferred. Applicants with mechanical aptitude are desired.
Ability to read and understand service, repair, and parts manuals, mechanical diagrams, safety and hazardous materials communications. Intermediate math and computer skills required. Intermediate problem-solving skills.**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
