DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe vision of the Fleet Management Department is to be recognized as the best managed fleets in the country. We are actively seeking a
MECHANIC I
who thrives in performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics and repairs of limited complexity to City vehicles & equipment.
The MECHANIC I duties will include but is not limited to:
- Performs preventative maintenance activates to vehicles and equipment including but not limited to oil and filter changes, servicing of lubricant and fluid levels, component wear inspections and systems check.
- Responds to limited complexity reports of operation/condition issues with vehicles and equipment. Performs systems testing and diagnostics to determine cause and course of repair action.
- Replaces failed vehicle and equipment components of limited complexity.
- Rebuilds vehicle and equipment components of limited complexity as needed.
- Performs vehicle body and paint repairs of limited complexity as well as component upfit and make ready.
- Performs vehicle body and paint repairs as needed at garages and at off-side locations.
- Orders parts and updates/completes work orders according to standard operating procedures.
- Uses tools and equipment such as electronic and mechanical diagnostic equipment, tire changers, bench grinders, pressure washers, hoists, jacks and a variety of hand & power tools.
- Maintains a clean & safe work environment. Performs housekeeping duties. Observes environmental & hazardous material procedures. Works safety and follows all safety procedures.
WORKING CONDITIONSThe position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold moisture, air pollution, chemical gases and substances. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns.
Must furnish own hand tools.This is a FLEET Management Department Position at the Tier I Level.
Requirements
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTSHigh School Diploma or GEDEXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSOne-year experience of automotive, diesel and/or heavy-equipment maintenance/repair experience is required or One year of full-time, secondary vocational education in automotive, diesel, and/or heavy equipment (off road) technology.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTSValid Texas Class C upon hire. Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 6-months of employment. Must comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving
Qualifications
Applicants with mechanical aptitude are desired and ASE or I-Car certificationsAbility to read & understand service, repair, parts manuals, mechanical diagrams, safety & hazardous materials communications.Basic math & computer skills with basic problem solving skills.**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6. **
