Full Job Description
Under general supervision, working alone or with an assistant in a laboratory or in the field, performs standardized laboratory tests on a variety of highway materials and soils.
Requirements
1. Conducts standardized tests on highway materials and soil samples to determine such
properties as specific gravity, viscosity, ductility, plastic limit and index, demulsibility,
shrinkage ratio and limit, softening point, melting point, penetration, porosity, and
compaction characteristics.
2. Performs sieve analyses, oxidation recovery tests, abrasion tests, soundness loss tests,
bitumen, carbon, and moisture content tests, unconfined compression tests, transverse shear
tests, visual inspection tests, penetrometer tests, etc.
3. Instructs others in testing procedures.
4. Records test data.
5. Performs routine calculations.
6. Lays out and drafts sub-soil profiles.
7. Acts as a leader of a crew engaged in cutting paving samples from streets.
8. Locates points in streets at which paper course separators have been placed by measuring
predetermined points.
9. Lays out and divides sample rectangles for cutting.
10. Preserves samples for analysis.
11. Ensures sampling equipment is maintained in proper operating condition.
Qualifications
High School graduation or GED; coursework in chemistry and physics preferred,
Qualifications (Preferred)One year of experience in testing samples of soil and highway materials.
Licensing and Certifications
Employees in this class may be required to provide and operate a motor vehicle on a reimbursed mileage basis.
Valid State of Michigan Driver Operator License is required.
Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on the requirement of the position.
