Full Job Description

The Maintenance Mechanic performs a variety of duties including preventive maintenance, repair of buildings, structures and components, building equipment, fixtures, and utility components.

The mechanic must possess a wide variety of skills and knowledge associated with carpentry, plumbing, metal fabrication, mobile equipment operation, soldering, brazing, welding, and oxy/acetylene cutting.

Work includes demolition, removal, installation, modification, and alteration. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.

Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.

Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.

Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Preferred Experience: Journeyman-Level Multi-Trade Maintenance Mechanic prefer people with strong experience in several trades: HVAC / HVAC-R systems Plumbing & pipefitting Electrical troubleshooting Carpentry Masonry / concrete work Welding and fabrication Boiler or heating systems Painting and finishing work 2.

Facility Systems Maintenance Preferred candidates often have experience maintaining large institutional facilities like: Hospitals Military bases Industrial plants Universities Large commercial buildings Typical duties include: Installing and repairing building systems Preventive maintenance on HVAC and mechanical systems Troubleshooting electrical/mechanical equipment Repairing doors, roofs, walls, and structural components 3.

Technical Skills & Tools Federal maintenance mechanics are expected to know how to: Use testing and measuring instruments Read blueprints and technical specifications Work with digital building control systems Maintain tools and mechanical equipment 4.

Computer & Work Order Systems Preferred experience with: Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) Entering work orders and maintenance data Tracking equipment and repairs digitally 5.

Other Preferred Qualifications: Common additional preferences: Valid driver's license Knowledge of safety procedures and PPE EPA 608 HVAC certification (sometimes required) Major Duties:

Masonry duties, including installing, repairing and replacing major components such as shower pan installation, concrete, ceramic, porcelain, mosaic and quarry tile floors and walls, masonry supported door frames, steps, sidewalks, curbing, road work and parking spaces.

Carpentry duties, including repair and/or modifications of doors, windows, window frames, furniture, cabinetry, walls, flooring, door hardware, locks, roof systems and components, fire doors, fire wall systems and components.

Locksmith duties including installation, maintenance, adjustment and repair of door operating and securing devices to include electrified panic release devices and alarms, automatic and semiautomatic hydraulic, pneumatic, electric and spring-loaded mechanical operators, closers and controls.

Painting tasks to include finishing/refinishing all types of interior and exterior building surfaces, to include gypsum wallboard (sheetrock), plaster, concrete, metal, cloth, wood, brick, etc.

finishing new wallboard partitions, taping and floating seams, joints, corners and edges, preparing walls, applying prime coat and final finish.

Plumbing, industrial equipment, and electrical tasks to include installing, maintaining, modifying and repairing plumbing and piping equipment, such as sinks, water closets, urinals, drinking fountains Electrical includes installing, maintaining, modifying, repairing, trouble-shooting and testing new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls and equipment.

Work includes, but is not limited to, lighting fixtures, circuit breakers, power distribution panels and distribution lines.

HVAC includes the maintaining, repairing, modifying, testing, inspecting, analyzing for defects, troubleshooting and eliminating malfunctions on all the non-medical heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigerated equipment in the facility and is independently capable of accomplishing duties of the trade.

Maintains documentation of all inspections, repairs, work performed, vendor repairs, etc. as part of equipment histories. Leaves job site and shop in clean, safe condition when finished.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm, or 7:30am - 4:00pm Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic/PD03675A Physical Requirements: Inspection and maintenance work requires frequent visits to areas that are cramped and noisy or where temperature extremes or inclement weather conditions exits.

Such work may require long periods of standing, bending, crouching, and stretching reaching, lifting and other physical movement to reach building service equipment.

Incumbent must have a fair degree of coordination to prevent injuring self.

Incumbent must be physically fit, have good eyesight, depth and color perception, and the use of all limbs and be capable of lifting, bending, stooping, prolonged walked, standing, climbing, crawling and entering and working in cramped areas in order to accomplish work.

This position requires lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling heavy (up to 100 pounds) objects and occasionally heavier weights with assistance.

Incumbent works from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, motorized high-lift, etc.

as well as other hard to reach places, Incumbent must be in good physical condition, have good eyesight with or without glasses and cannot be colorblind.
