The Washington State Penitentiary is staff 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. The Department of Corrections, as a partner in the criminal justice system, enhances public safety, administers criminal sanctions and programs in accordance with the law and provides leadership for the future of corrections in Washington State.

The Department consists of the Office of the Secretary, Prisons Division, Community Corrections Division, Administrative Services Division, Health Services Division, Communications Department and Risk Management Department. The Washington State Penitentiary is comprised of 4 Close Custody Units, 3 Special Housing Units, 2 Intensive Management Units, 2 Medium Units, 2 Minimum Housing Units and a Hospital. In all, WSP houses approximately 2,000 incarcerated individuals and employees approximately 1,100 staff.

Requirements

Reporting to the Construction and Maintenance Project Supervisor, this position performs work with the maintenance and repair of gates, doors, mechanical locking devices, machinery and equipment used for detention, security, and safety at the facility. Maintenance of these systems and equipment are necessary to support a safe and secure environment for staff, incarcerated individuals, and visitors. This work involves metal fabrication, welding, troubleshooting and repair of related equipment while supervising a crew of incarcerated individuals in the course of the job.

Duties include but not limited to the following:

Perform installation and maintenance of the facilities mechanical systems in a workman-like manner, while supervising incarcerated work crew in the Fix-it ShopMaintain doors and gates.

Installation, maintenance, replacement, repair, demolition, construction, and fabrication of facility building mechanical equipment, machinery, and utilities. Welding and cutting of metal.

Participate, supervise, and observe your area staff and incarcerated individuals engaged in maintenance, repair, modifications of carts, gates, doors, machinery, and equipment.Review project plans and blue prints.Use of tools, ladders, scaffolding and operation of heavy equipment.Tool control, Lock-out/Tag-out, Fall Protection, Confined Space Entry, SDS & FTCM (Safety Data Sheet & Flammable Toxic Caustic Material) logs, PPE and all other safety compliance processes.Prepares reports, evaluates incarcerated individuals performance, provide cost estimations, provide trending date for review and analysis.Maintain shop inventory and place orders for materials, equipment, and supplies as needed.

Qualifications REQUIRED:High School diploma/GEDValid Drivers LicenseTwo (2) years of journey level experience installing, fabricating, welding, operation, and maintenance of equipment and machinery.PREFERRED/DESIRED:Completion of a recognized vocational program in a skilled mechanic trade.
