This job involves operating machine tools to shape and finish metal parts for naval shipyard projects, following detailed instructions like blueprints to ensure precision.

You will serve as a MACHINE TOOL OPERATOR in the MECHANICAL SHOP, PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEATRTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.
Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION: *Set up and make changes in machine setup, such as readjusting for different sizes of work pieces, or changes in shape.
*Machine castings, forgings, or bar stock of various metals and metal alloys. *Check dimensions using various standard or preset gauges and precision tools.
*Aligns work in machine according to prescribed methods and specified reference points and does layouts to establish reference points.
*Operates machine, controlling speed and feed, and brings various tools to bear in successive operations.
