Job Description

Summary

This seasonal job involves leading a team of lifeguards at Little Buffalo State Park to keep swimmers safe in the park's pool during the summer months.

You'll assign tasks, train staff, enforce rules, and jump in to help with rescues or first aid when needed.

It's ideal for experienced lifeguards who enjoy outdoor work, leading others, and ensuring fun and safe experiences for park visitors.

Key Requirements

  • Two seasons of lifeguard experience or equivalent combination of experience and training
  • Valid Lifeguard Certification or Lifeguard Management Certification from American Red Cross, YMCA, USLA, or PA Department of Health-approved authority (obtain within 14 days of hire)
  • Valid certifications in standard first aid and CPR for adult, child, and infant (obtain within 14 days of hire)
  • Ability to supervise and train lifeguard team, including planning assignments and performance evaluations
  • Strong swimming skills and participation in rescue operations
  • Enforce park regulations and communicate policy changes
  • Meet Pennsylvania residency requirements
  • Availability for full-time seasonal work (May-September), 11 AM-7 PM shifts, 5 of 7 days including weekends and holidays

Requirements

In this vital position, you will oversee public safety operations by supervising Lifeguards tasked with patrolling, observing, and monitoring the swimming pool at Little Buffalo State State Park to ensure visitor safety and maintain order.

Your responsibilities will include planning and organizing work assignments for your team, preparing performance evaluations, and identifying training needs to facilitate further education for subordinates.

You will also demonstrate proper techniques, communicate changes in rules and policies, and actively participate in rescue operations for distressed swimmers.

Additionally, you will administer first aid and CPR to injured visitors while enforcing the park's regulations and procedures.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time seasonal employment. The season runs from May through September.
  • Work hours are 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with a 30-minute lunch
  • Work days will vary, employee will work 5 of 7 days per work week, to include weekends, holidays and all shifts as needed

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two seasons of experience as a Lifeguard (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.


Special Requirements:

  • All employees must obtain a valid Lifeguard Certification or Lifeguard Management Certification issued by the American Red Cross, YMCA, United States Lifesaving Association, or other authority recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Health within 14 days of employment.
  • All employees must obtain valid certifications in standard first aid and adult, child, and infant CPR within 14 days of employment.


Other Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Legal Requirements:
  • You must pass a background investigation.
  • This position falls under the provisions of the Child Protective Services Law.
    • Under the Law, a conditional offer of employment will require submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports including, but not limited to, PA State Police clearance, PA Child Abuse history clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.
