Requirements

As a Life and Health Insurance Actuary 1, you will be responsible for analyzing and evaluating life, accident, and/or health (L&H) rate filings, to ensure that proposed rates are not excessive, inadequate, or unfairly discriminatory and that the filings comply with applicable federal and state laws. Work involves verifying consistency of pricing and product design, providing initial reviews of rates, reviewing calculations of nonforfeiture values, and determining if reserves are computed using sound actuarial principles and comply with minimum statutory requirements. Effective communication is key as you will be corresponding with insurers to obtain information, request revisions, and identify potential federal or state law violations as it pertains to rates. You may also assist with reviewing, preparing, or researching information needed for bulletin publication, testimony, legislation, policy, and department regulations as it pertains to L&H insurance.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days per week.

    In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania.

    If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.

  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $77,379.00 (before taxes).

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of four parts of the Society of Actuaries actuarial examination program, or three years of actuarial experience in life and/or accident and health insurance; and a bachelor's degree with major course work in mathematics or statistics; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
