Job Description
Summary
This job is for a lieutenant at a secure prison facility, where you'll lead a team of security officers, manage inmate safety and daily operations, and ensure everything runs smoothly and securely.
It's ideal for someone with hands-on experience in corrections or law enforcement who likes supervising people and handling high-pressure situations.
You'll need to be reliable, fair, and good at solving problems on the spot.
Key Requirements
- High school diploma required
- Three years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work
- One year of supervisory experience (or equivalent degree substitution)
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for required experience
- Must complete eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire
- Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy
- Must successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six months
Full Job Description
- Under general supervision, plans, coordinates and directs the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody, and control of Inmates in assigned unit(s) of a medium/maximum security facility.
- Assumes primary responsibility for security for all buildings and public property.
- Makes routine checks of the unit(s) to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
- Assists with all Inmate counts for accuracy.
- Investigates complaints and violations; Arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.
Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
SCDC Minimum Requirements:
- A high school diploma and three (3) years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one (1) year of supervisory experience.
- A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
- Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
