Job Description

Summary

This job involves supporting a librarian in a U.S.

Air Force library by handling tasks like checking out books, helping patrons find information, managing loans between libraries, and organizing events.

It also requires using computers and office software to keep records and create documents.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide technical support to a librarian by performing a variety of public and technical services.

In order to qualify, you must meet the generalized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Clerical and Administrative Support Positions GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of general experience for the GS-04 level position.

Examples of experience includes: Knowledge of a body of standardized library rules, procedures, and operations related to one or more library functions, such as those used to maintain the collection, locate information, process library materials, or assist clientele with routine inquiries; Knowledge of circulation procedures to perform all regular duties including issuance and cancellation of borrower cards and resolving recurring problems, such as lost or damaged books or magazines; Knowledge of several interlibrary loan sources, and of standard verification and request procedures to locate and borrow items where requests are frequently incomplete or contain incorrect citations; Knowledge of programs in a general library to conduct special events, locate materials for exhibits on a given theme, and to prepare announcements of events/programs for bulletin boards and employee newsletters; Knowledge of library operating policies and procedures and routine reference sources to answer recurring questions from users on such matters as borrowing and access privileges, interlibrary loan procedures and library programs, simple ready reference questions, and recurring questions from vendors on procedural matters; Knowledge of one or more automated databases associated with a specific function, such as interlibrary loan, sufficient to make standard queries and/or to input standard information and generate reports; Knowledge of the nature and capability of word processing software procedures and function keys to perform a substantial range of functions such as generating tables of contents, importing graphs or databases, creating glossaries, aligning multiple columns, automatically printing document identification or other notations at the top or bottom of the page, and creating form letters and automatically merge these with mailing lists (A fully qualified typist is required).

OR EDUCATION: 2 years above high school obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college or university. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts.

OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of a body of standardized library rules, procedures, and operations related to one or more library functions, such as those used to maintain the collection, locate information, process library materials, or assist clientele with routine inquiries.

Skill in typing; a qualified typist is required. Knowledge of one or more automated databases associated with a specific library function.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a diverse group of individuals, using a high degree of tact and diplomacy.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work.

You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:

Performs circulation and registration duties. Shelves books, magazines, and other library materials in accordance with various systems used in the library.

Performs information searches using electronic databases, CD-ROM databases, and traditional library indexes.

Performs routine clerical tasks, such as answering the telephone, taking messages, and referring callers or visitors to appropriate staff members.

Assists librarian in planning and developing programs and publicity and marketing of events, including design of flyers, posters, displays, preparation, and submission of news releases.

Uses varied and advanced functions of word processing software to prepare, format, modify, edit, and print avariety of letters, reports, memos, and other textual documents.
