Job Description

Summary

The Library Safety Specialist works in public libraries to keep spaces safe and welcoming by building relationships with visitors, handling conflicts calmly, and leading responses to emergencies.

This role involves enforcing rules, de-escalating tense situations, and supporting staff and patrons in a community-focused environment.

It's a good fit for someone with experience in security or conflict resolution who enjoys interacting with diverse groups and values equity and inclusion.

Saint Paul Public Libraries is currently hiring a Library Safety Specialist! This is an exciting opportunity to build partnerships with the community and contribute to a safety culture within our public spaces.

Here is what you can expect to do:
  • Contribute to the safe and welcoming environment by providing a supportive presence to staff and patrons.
  • Engage in the library community and build relationships with patrons.
  • Respond to behaviors against library policy and help de-escalate elevated behaviors.
  • Provide technical expertise in emergency response and be prepared to help lead building in crisis and emergency management.
  • Communicate and enforce the library conduct policy and assists other staff in enforcing it.
  • Serves as the lead for handling crisis and emergency situations. Understands, reviews, and instructs others in building emergency management plans.

Information Specific to this Position:
This position will be expected to work in various library locations. Worksites are to be determined, subject to notification and change. This role requires flexibility to work outside of regular office hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends. This position also requires standing and walking for longs periods during your workday.

Requirements

Five years of safety and security experience in at least one of the following areas: security, law enforcement, program or project management, conflict resolution, or restorative practices.

A bachelor’s degree in social work, Criminal Justice, Occupational Safety, Psychology, or a related field can substitute for four years of experience. An associate degree can substitute for two years of experience.

  • Other types of educational experience and/or professional certifications that confer similar levels of specialized knowledge can be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The Qualifications Rating is an assessment of your completed application, resume, and answers to the Supplemental Questionnaire. GENERAL INFORMATION:

Open Job Posting: This posting is open to anyone who meets the position requirements.

Eligible Lists Created from Open Job Posting: You must receive a score of 75% or higher to pass the assessment and be considered for the position. Non-promotion eligible lists typically are pass/fail and promotion eligible lists are typically ranked. If the open eligible list created contains a veteran, one open list will exist. When there are no veterans remaining on the eligible list (i.e. hired, withdrawn) from an open list that also contains promotional candidates, two lists will be created: one open list and one promotion list. If two lists exist, the promotion list must be exhausted before the open list is considered.

Final Selection Process: Those who pass will be placed on an eligible list for approximately six months and all will be notified of their status. A Hiring Manager will consider those applicants eligible for hire. You will be notified if you are invited to participate in the final selection process which may include an interview, job simulation, work sample submission, or other evaluation method.

Pre-Employment Screening: This position requires a background check which may include criminal history, and employment history as a condition of employment. Candidates will be required to submit proof of education to Human Resources upon conditional job offer, if qualifying based on education.
