Job Description

Summary

This job is for a senior legal assistant in the U.S.

Attorney's Office in Phoenix, where you'll help federal prosecutors by preparing complex legal documents, researching facts and laws, and organizing evidence for cases, especially those involving immigration and human trafficking.

It's a good fit for someone with a year of experience supporting lawyers in a fast-paced legal environment and strong typing skills.

As you gain experience, your responsibilities will grow to include training others and providing expert advice on investigations.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-7, including supporting attorneys and handling complex legal documents like pleadings, motions, briefs, affidavits, complaints, orders, and subpoenas
  • Experience obtaining information from files, law enforcement agencies, or other sources
  • Conducting factual and legal research and providing information to attorneys
  • Aiding in the preparation and organization of evidence for trials
  • Typing speed of at least 40 words per minute with three or fewer errors on a 5-minute sample
  • Knowledge of regulations and laws related to illegal reentry and human trafficking
  • Ability to provide training and guidance to other support staff as a subject matter expert

GS-8: To be eligible at the GS-8 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level.

Specialized experience is defined as experience supporting attorneys, preparing and processing a variety of technical legal documents which are characteristically voluminous and complex in format (e.g.

pleadings, stipulations, motions, briefs, affidavits, complaints, orders and subpoenas); obtaining information from files, law enforcement agencies, or other sources; conducting factual and legal research and providing requested information to attorneys; aiding in the preparation and organization of evidence for use in trial.

To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.

(A typing test may later be required.) Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.

If your agency has notified you in writing that you are a displaced employee eligible for ICTAP consideration, you may receive selection priority if: 1) this vacancy is within your ICTAP eligibility; 2) you apply under the instructions in the announcement; and 3) you are found well-qualified for this vacancy.

As a senior assistant, you will support Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) by providing a variety of legal assistance and office support services.

Duties include: Provides expert advice on complex immigration investigations and prosecutions.

Serves as a legal assistance subject matter expert and provides training and guidance to other support staff.

Maintains current knowledge of regulations, laws applicable to illegal reentry and human trafficking. Provides a variety of direct legal support to one or more AUSAs.

Prepares a wide variety of legal documents, many of which are voluminous and complex in format.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
