Job Description

Summary

This job is for a senior legal assistant who supports lawyers in a U.S.

Attorney's office by preparing legal documents, organizing evidence for trials, and handling administrative tasks like scheduling.

It involves working independently on complex cases in a federal court setting in Anchorage, Alaska.

A good fit would be someone with at least a year of hands-on experience assisting attorneys, strong attention to detail, and comfort using computers for legal work.

As needed, additional positions may be filled using this announcement. GS-8: To be eligible at the GS-8 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level.

Specialized experience is defined as experience providing assistance to attorneys by preparing complaints, motions, subpoenas, orders, or other hearing and/or trial documents accurately and in proper format; verifying citations and statutory references contained in legal documents; assisting with discovery, hearing or trial preparation by performing duties such as compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compiling witness and exhibit lists; and using automated software to produce legal related reports and documents, including developing tables of contents and indices to briefs.

To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.) Major Duties:

If selected for this position you will serve as a senior legal assistant responsible for directly and independently supporting Assistant United States Attorneys with a wide variety of legal assistance services.

The work requires a specialized knowledge of the processes, procedures, and practices of legal assistance activities.

Typical work assignments will include: With a high degree of independence, prepares legal actions such as indictments, criminal complaints, search warrants, judgements, notices, affidavits, and grand jury subpoenas.

Acts as a legal assistance subject matter expert and provides training, guidance and technical Independently processes cases and legal matters by applying a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of the U.S.

Attorney and extensive practical litigative experience Assists attorneys buy searching for legal precedent in indices and computerized legal reference systems.

Aids in preparing and organizing evidence for production as discovery and for use in trial, Assists attorneys in trial preparation by performing duties such as independently compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compiling witness and exhibit lists Maintains calendar(s) of the AUSA(s), scheduling appointments, interviews, and conferences, and provides reminders of commitments and court appearances.

Reviews incoming material and determines the need for correspondence and legal documents such as motions, orders, pleadings and subpoenas.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
