Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a small team of firefighters in responding to emergencies, including structural fires, aircraft crashes, and hazardous material incidents, while also providing basic medical support.

It requires hands-on experience in firefighting operations and training others on safety protocols.

A good fit would be someone with proven firefighting expertise, leadership skills, and a passion for emergency response in a military or high-stakes environment.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-07, including instructing on firefighting techniques, preparing reports and schedules, performing structural and crash-rescue firefighting, conducting hazard assessments, and providing basic life support
  • Possess Firefighter I and II certifications (DoD, IFSAC, or ProBoard)
  • Possess Airport Firefighter certification (DoD, IFSAC, or ProBoard)
  • Possess HazMat Technician certification (DoD, IFSAC, or ProBoard)
  • Possess Driver/Operator-Pumper certification (DoD, IFSAC, or ProBoard)
  • Possess Fire Officer I and Fire Instructor I certifications (DoD, IFSAC, or ProBoard)
  • Possess Fire Inspector I certification (DoD, IFSAC, or ProBoard)
  • National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) certification at the EMT level

Full Job Description

You will serve as a LEAD FIREFIGHTER (BLS/ HAZMAT TECH) in the Fire and Emergency Services Division of COMMANDER NAVY REGION HAWAII.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Instructing employees on specific tasks and firefighting techniques; 2) Preparing and submitting a variety of documentation such as reports, schedules, checklists, and data files; 3) Performing structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities that may include research and/or large industrial complexes; 4) Performing crash-rescue and firefighting duties involving air traffic or support operations; 5) Performing hazard and risk assessments; and 6) Performing basic life support, initiating established medical protocols.

NOTE: This experience must be supported in your resume.

This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications: Firefighter I and II, Airport Firefighter, HazMat Technician, Driver/Operator-Pumper, Fire Officer I, and Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I.

These certifications must have been awarded by DoD, IFSAC or ProBoard to meet the requirement. Also requires National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) certification at the EMT level.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Major Duties:

  • You will lead a crew of three or more firefighters assigned to staff a pumper, aerial ladder truck, or rescue vehicle in firefighting and rescue operations.
  • You will analyze the structural condition of a building to determine firefighting equipment and apparatus required to fight fire.
  • You will use hazard and risk assessment techniques to complete an initial hazardous materials incident analysis.
  • You will conduct patient assessments, determine appropriate care at the basic life support level, and
  • You will operate firefighting equipment (e.g., pumps, foam generators, boom, ground sweep nozzles) to control or eliminate fires.
