Defense Finance and Accounting Services (DFAS) mission is to lead the Department of Defense (DoD) in finance and accounting by ensuring the delivery of efficient, exceptional quality pay and financial information.

In addition to the Basic Competency Requirements listed above, one year of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of the next lower grade GS-12 in the federal service, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position, is required.

Specialized experience is defined as applying financial management methods, practices, and principles in planning and implementing process improvements relative to large-scale accounting and financial systems; providing recommendations on appropriate use and implementation of database management systems; and performing studies on current and future information and data management systems.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual, community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates to paid employment.

  • Monitors and reports on the status and progress of work by regularly checking work in progress and reviewing completed assignments to ensure that supervisory instructions regarding work priorities and quality standards have been met.
  • Coordinates maintenance and support activities of major finance and accounting automated information systems with IT specialists, project managers, and functional users to ensure system adequacy and alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Prepares reports and maintain records of work accomplishments and administrative information, as required, and coordinate the preparation, presentation and communication of work relates information to the supervisory.
  • Estimates and reports to the team on progress in meeting established milestones and deadlines for the completion of assignments, projects, and tasks.
  • Assists staff in determining priorities and ensures the adequacy of project plans, technical proposals, and the analysis, design, testing, debugging, deployment, monitoring, and maintenance of software and system.
  • Ensures that all team members are aware of and actively participate in planning for the achievement of team goals.
  • Directs the testing and implementation of automated system enhancements to improve the performance and functionality of major finance and accounting information systems.
  • Performs studies to monitor, improve, and enhance automated information systems to meet current and future organizational needs.
