DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community.

To achieve this mission, HPARD is seeking Laborers to join its Natural Resources team.

The potential candidate will play a key role in the following duties:


  • Conducts prairie and riparian habitat restoration within parks.
  • Works in the HPARD greenhouse to propagate plants for habitat restoration.
  • Participates in volunteer workdays, planting events and conservation service events.
  • Performs trash cleanup of riparian areas.
  • Conducts invasive species removal using mechanical and/or chemical methods.
  • Performs technical data collection, research, analysis, evaluations, inspections, or surveys to determine the impact on natural resources.
  • Participates in community outreach events to educate citizens about the value of native habitat.
  • Participates in online and hands-on training provided by various organizations.
  • Performs related work as assigned.


WORKING CONDITIONSThere are routine exposures to moderate heat, cold, moisture/wetness and unpleasant air condition. The position may involve routine exposure to soiled materials and light chemical substances such as cleaning solutions.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Very fundamental levels of ability to read, write and follow simple oral instructions as might normally be acquired through up to 8 years of formal schooling.


EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

No experience is required.


LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

May require a valid Texas Class C driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2).

Qualifications

Applicants who can work Day, Evening, Night, Weekend, and Holiday Shifts.


**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
