This entry-level trainee position involves learning to drive trucks and operate equipment for road maintenance, snow removal, and manual labor tasks under close supervision in Baltimore County's public works department.
It's ideal for someone starting out in hands-on outdoor work who is reliable, physically fit, and eager to gain skills in vehicle operation and basic maintenance.
The role offers training to build proficiency over up to 12 months, leading to potential advancement.
Pay Schedule II, Grade H15, Regular Schedule: 40 hours per week
Vacancies exist in the Department of Public Works and Transportation, Bureau of Highways and Equipment Maintenance.

Drives commercial weight, single-axle vehicles including dump, water, and tool trucks.Assists in salting and plowing roads during snow emergencies.Operates and tows equipment such as tractors with mowing or other attachments, stump grinders, rubber tire loaders, and rollers.Loads, unloads, or assists in loading and unloading equipment, tools, and materials.Performs various manual labor tasks.Assists in performing preventative maintenance and routine maintenance on trucks and/or equipment.Keeps simple records and logs.Participates in safety related training including, but not limited to, confined space and trench working conditions and the handling of hazardous materials.Examples of Other DutiesMay drive automobile, truck, or other non-commercial weight vehicles.

Qualifications Possession of a valid license equivalent to a non-provisional, non-commercial, class C Maryland driver's license.Preferred ExperienceWork experience with unskilled manual labor tasks.Age RequirementNon-Maryland residents must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.Licenses and CertificatesPossession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a non-provisional, non-commercial, class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of application.NOTE: If you have a driver's license from a state other than Maryland, you must submit a current copy of your driving record, and a copy of your driver's license.

Applicants must state the dates and duties of past and present experience clearly and completely for evaluation purposes. Additional Information This is a training classification.
Employees are appointed to this classification for a maximum of twelve months.
Upon receipt of a Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and a valid license equivalent to a commercial, class B Maryland driver's license, and subject to the approval of the Office of Budget and Finance and the Office of Human Resources, incumbents will be reclassified to Laborer II.
Incumbents who do not obtain a Medical Examiner's Certificate and a valid license equivalent to a commercial, class B Maryland driver's license within ten months of employment will be terminated.Safety ShoesIndividuals are supplied yearly shoe tickets, but are required to supply their own safety shoes at the beginning of employment.Physical and Environmental ConditionsThe work of this classification entails the performance of heavy physical labor including, bending, stooping, lifting, and carrying heavy objects, and the operation of vehicles, tools, and heavy equipment.
Some work requires exposure to potentially hazardous conditions such as standing in traffic, working in trenches, and adverse weather.Medical Examination and Employment Background InvestigationApplicants selected for employment with Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination, drug screening and employment investigation, including, but not limited to criminal background, education certification and fingerprinting checks.
