Job Description

Summary

This job involves working with young people who have mental health issues and are involved in the justice system, by assessing their situations, supervising them in the community, and helping them and their families through counseling and support services.

A good fit would be someone with a background in social work or counseling who is patient, good at communicating, and comfortable handling potentially challenging behaviors in youth.

The role also includes preparing court reports, coordinating with agencies, and ensuring safety during transport or in court settings.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree plus 1,750 hours of full-time experience in casework, counseling, community work, or related fields in social services, corrections, or juvenile agencies dealing with offenders or disadvantaged persons
  • OR Bachelor's Degree plus one year of full-time graduate study (30 semester hours) toward a Master's in criminology, corrections, counseling, law, social work, psychology, or related field
  • Knowledge of self-defense techniques with annual training required
  • Ability to conduct intake interviews, assess cases, and determine appropriate actions including referrals to the District Attorney
  • Experience in preparing court reports, attending hearings, and providing supervision and counseling to juveniles and families
  • Skills in crisis intervention, physical and mechanical restraint, and behavioral support for youth with mental health diagnoses
  • Ability to transport clients, coordinate with community agencies, and provide services to victims including restitution agreements

Full Job Description

This position supervises youth in the community who have a mental health diagnosis.
  • Receive, review and evaluate police referrals from law enforcement agencies involving juveniles.
  • Determine appropriate actions through the interview process.
  • Prepare reports for presentation to the Court.
  • Provide supervision of cases under the jurisdiction of the Juvenile Court and Juvenile Services.
  • Counsel and assist juveniles and their families in development rehabilitation.
  • Provide safe and secure supervision of juveniles while in the Courtroom, while transporting, or in any other location when youth is in custody.
  • Provide assistance and services to victims.

Requirements

Receives referrals from police agencies and school districts within Tarrant County and assesses background factors in order to facilitate the disposition of the case.Conducts intake interviews and makes determination on referral of case to the District Attorney's Office for legal action.

Coordinates all procedures involved until the case is completed.Prepares and submits court reports for court proceedings.

Attends court hearings and provides information to the Court as required.Provides court ordered and non-court-ordered supervision.

Establishes and performs casework objectives through interviewing and counseling with client and family in the office, school and in the field.Develops case plans for assigned youth and conducts reviews in accordance with department policy and provides post supervision as well.Accesses community agencies and coordinates treatment for clients, families and victims as needed.Maintains and updates chronological dictation reflecting contacts and casework initiated with clients, family members, victims, school officials and service providersCoordinates actions with staff and outside authorities concerning case progressionTransports clients, family members and victims for court and community service appointments.Potentially intervenes in aggressive and self-injurious behaviors with crisis intervention, counseling, physical and mechanical restraint, when the youth is under his/her direct supervision.

Must be knowledgeable of and annually trained in self-defense techniques.Ensures that victims are advised of their rights.

Develops victim's restitution agreements.Schedules supervision contacts with clients.Provides direct services to victims as needed.May collect data and prepare statistical reports.Provides behavioral support and counseling intervention within specialized programs.Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications Bachelor's Degree + 1,750 hours of full-time casework, counseling, community or group work, or related experience in a social service, community, corrections, or juvenile agency that deals with offenders or disadvantaged persons required -OR-

  • Bachelors Degree and One (1) year of full-time graduate study towards a Master's degree (30 semester hours) in criminology, corrections, counseling, law, social work, psychology or a related field.
  • Applicants who graduate from a foreign school must present written documentation validating their education as meeting the standards of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) from a Texas Juvenile Justice Department approved service.

    • Must have a valid driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance.
    • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.

    • Ability to obtain and maintain current certification by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department as a Juvenile Probation Officer.
    • Ability to participate in Non-Violent Physical Restraint, with annual training in verbal de-escalation, self-defense, and physical restraint components of the training.
    • Skilled in counseling and interviewing and have a good working knowledge of community referral resources.
    • Good written and verbal communication skills.
    • Experience providing direct service to youth and families with mental health history preferred.

    NOTE: YOU MUST FILL OUT THE WORK HISTORY and EDUCATION SECTIONS OF APPLICATION TO SHOW YOU HAVE YEARS OF EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION AS REQUIRED BY HIRING DEPARTMENT OR BE DISQUALIFIED.

    If hired, must provide proof of educational attainment during on-boarding.

    Tarrant County will conduct background checks on new hires that will include a criminal background check related to convictions and deferred adjudications in the past seven years and may include credit reports, motor vehicle records, employment records and educational attainment.

    A conviction or deferred adjudication is not an automatic bar to employment. Each case is considered individually.

    Additional Information

    While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is regularly required to lift and transport case files to court, sit, walk, stand and work with unpredictable and potentially violent clients/probationers. May be exposed to communicable and contagious diseases; potential for restraint situations involving juveniles who are self-destructive or confrontational.
