This job involves building, updating, and testing software applications to support the financial operations of Washington's Employment Security Department, helping modernize systems that handle unemployment benefits and family leave programs.
It's a temporary role lasting until December 2027, mostly done remotely with occasional in-person meetings in Olympia.

The ideal candidate for the Application Developer (IT Application Development-Journey) role is a technically skilled and forward-thinking professional who thrives in a modern, mission-driven technology environment.
They bring a strong foundation in software development, engineering practices, and application lifecycle management, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to the Innovation & Technology Office’s efforts to support and modernize the Employment Security Department’s systems.
With an understanding of how technology underpins critical statewide programs—including Unemployment Insurance, WorkSource services, and Paid Family and Medical Leave—they appreciate the impact their work has on more than 1,600 agency staff and the Washingtonians they serve.
This candidate excels at developing, enhancing, and maintaining applications that support the Finance Division’s essential operations.
They are comfortable working across web applications, database design, documentation, and testing, and they bring a disciplined approach to software quality and integration.
Their analytical mindset allows them to conduct deep data analysis, evaluate system behavior, and design solutions that strengthen data-driven decision-making across the agency.
They are equally adept at collaborating with technical teams and business partners, ensuring that solutions align with operational needs and modernization goals.
Above all, the ideal candidate is a proactive, collaborative partner who embodies the Finance Services Division’s commitment to professionalism and exceptional support.
They communicate clearly, work effectively within cross-functional teams, and take pride in delivering reliable, well-engineered solutions that help the agency operate efficiently and responsively.
