Job Description

Summary

This job involves managing and maintaining Oracle databases for state licensing applications, handling tasks like installing updates, creating queries, ensuring backups, and supporting security and reporting needs for the Department of Commerce.

It also includes coordinating projects, mentoring team members, and adapting to a shift from on-premises to cloud environments like AWS or Google Cloud.

Full Job Description

The chosen candidate in this position will support the Department of Workforce Services in Federal and State security audits, as well as oversee information security related projects and assignments. This is a highly technical, project-driven, and professional level position. The candidate will ensure that all DTS efforts on these projects are coordinated and that project deliverables are completed professionally, on time and within scope constraints and reach a successful conclusion.


The Department of Technology Services (DTS) has a great opportunity for someone who totally enjoys DBA work and working with a great team!

This position is for an Application Database Administrator (DBA) to support maintenance and development of the My License One (MLO) and My License 1 (ML1) applications for the Department of Commerce.


The MLO environment runs on an Oracle database in an environment managed by the State of Utah. The vendor, developer of the MLO and ML1 environments owns the applications themselves.

The DTS staff manage the administration of the applications.

The environment is currently in flux, likely to end up on an AWS or Google Cloud Platform (GCP) within the upcoming months moving from its on premises Exadata environment.

The state also has a DTS-side DBA who supports the physical and/or cloud environments for the day-to-day security, load balancing, backup and system management.


This position is currently a hybrid of both in-office and telework days (two days a week, in office required at the Heber M. Wells Building (160 E 300 S SLC, UT).

Please note, a position's eligibility for telework is established by agency management and is subject to change at their discretion at any time and for any reason.


This job may be filled at either of the levels listed below. (Rate as listed or in accordance with DHRM Rules for current state employees.)

  • IT Analyst II, $35.09- $59.63 per hour
  • IT Analyst I, $27.49 - $46.75 per hour

Requirements

The database analyst working on the MLO and ML1 environments should ideally be
able to:
  • Install, patch, maintain and monitor Oracle databases
  • Create and maintain SQL and PL/SQL queries and shell scripts
  • Monitor, and verify backups and perform ad-hoc backups
  • Provide maintenance support for database systems.
  • Data Extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL)
  • Perform routine security and authentication measures
  • Database tuning and troubleshooting
  • Support reporting products as required by the Department of Commerce
  • Mentoring
The Department of Technical Services employs an agile development methodology. DTS team members are part of sprint teams following the methodology.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee daily operations with MLO and ML1
  • Coordinate with the vendor for application side issues
  • Provide reports and reporting as requested by the business
  • Support Department of Commerce projects as requested
  • Develop and support the Commerce data warehouse
  • Document all activities, processes or other work
  • Gain a functional understanding of the professional licensing applications at a data structure, table, column and row level

Qualifications

  • Agile development methodology

  • Data modeling

  • Data design

  • Able to create and maintain stored procedures

  • Able to create and maintain complex PL-SQL queries

  • Proficient with ETL functions, oversight and support
