Job Description

Summary

This job involves managing data from long-term coastal wildlife surveys, including designing databases, ensuring data quality, and handling requests for information on reef fish populations.

It also includes supervising research cruises at sea, preparing reports, and leading sample analysis in labs.

A good fit would be someone with a science background who enjoys both desk work with data and hands-on fieldwork on boats in challenging conditions.

Key Requirements

  • Master's degree in biology, chemistry, or wildlife management plus 2 years of experience in fish, wildlife, or marine research; or bachelor's degree in a related field plus 4 years of experience
  • Extensive experience with electronic survey data capture, including design and configuration of hardware and software
  • Extensive experience in database maintenance, custom data extraction, and analysis
  • Knowledge of identifying Southeast US reef fishes (desired)
  • Experience reading biological samples such as otoliths and gonads
  • Excellent communication skills for reports, outreach, and coordination
  • Physical ability to work long hours at sea (12+ hour shifts up to 10 days), climb ladders in rough conditions, and lift heavy objects

Full Job Description

This employee will be responsible for overseeing data collection, data management, data-related protocols, and distribution of data to partners for long-term surveys for the Coastal Research Section.

Job Duties Include:
  • Designing and keeping all databases for Reef Fish Survey (RFS) projects up to date.
  • Managing data and metadata collected by the RFS along with accompanying efforts.
  • Overseeing the upload of data to the RFS database and running queries and analyses to ensure initial QA/QC of data.
  • Coordinating data management with pertinent staff.
  • Maintaining data and metadata archiving systems.
  • Coordinating the maintenance and updating of the MRD Fish taxonomy list.
  • Coordinating or completing all RFS data requests, including developing methods to create datasets and developing metadata to describe all fields in databases.
  • Consulting with other projects/programs' data management staff as needed.
  • Leading in the preparation of annual cruise report, SEDAR data reports, and other internal reports as needed.
  • Participating, mostly in a supervisory role, as a Chief Scientist or Watch Chief in assigned research cruises (including both trapping and trawling cruises).

    Tasks may include cruise preparation, overseeing all on board research activities, coordinating all activities with vessel Captain and crew, and completion of cruise reports.

  • Assisting with other field efforts (such as port sampling), mostly in a supervisory role.
  • Leading preparations of all field and lab data collection system design (including both electronic and analog).
  • Coordinating the maintenance and updating of all field electronics with pertinent logistics and data management staff and vessel captains and crew to ensure readiness of data acquisition software and hardware.
  • Leading life history sample reading for structures collected during MARMAP/SEAMAP-SA/SEFIS cruises, including as a species lead or life history reader.
  • Participating in written and verbal outreach efforts for the RFS, including leading data analysis for reports or publications using RFS data.

Requirements

A master's degree in biology, chemistry or wildlife management and two (2) years of experience in fish, wildlife or marine management or research programs; or a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, wildlife management or related technical area and four (4) years of experience in fish, wildlife or marine management or research programs.

Qualifications

Extensive experience with electronic survey data capture (design and configuration of electronic survey hardware and software). Extensive experience with database maintenance, custom data extraction, and analysis. Knowledgeable in the identification of SE US reef fishes desired. Experience with Microsoft Suite software. Experience reading biological samples (otoliths and gonads). Excellent communication skills. Ability to negotiate companionways and ladders in rough seas and regularly lift heavy objects (with assistance). Work long hours (12+ hour shifts) at sea up to ten (10) days at a time, occasionally on weekends or at night.
