Full Job Description
This employee is to operate and maintain the E/V Discovery and all issued department equipment with turnkey status. This position will also be tasked to assist with other SCDNR-MRD research vessels, ranging from 50 to 110 feet in length, while conducting scientific research cruises in inland, coastal, and offshore waters of South Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean from Cape Hatteras to Cape Canaveral.
Job Duties Include:
Maintaining the E/V Discovery and all issued department equipment. This includes:
Performing routine preventive maintenance (pm) on outboard engines, hydraulic steering, electronics, deck gear, rigging and all State issued vessel equipment.
Ensuring vessel is maintained to the USCG regulation required to maintain a Certificate of Inspection (COI).
Piloting, navigating and operating Marine Resources Division (MRD) research vessels.
Ensuring vessel scheduled departure times are met.
Providing relief for captains of other vessels.
Supervising all vessel activities, including routine preventative maintenance for the E/V Discovery.
Assisting vessel operations director with daily tasks and activities.
Monitoring and maintaining complete bridge, engineering and maintenance logs for the E/V Discovery.
Assisting in the development of specifications for projects as well as providing assistance regarding any procurement or purchasing needs for research vessels.
Assisting in the development and management of annual budgets for research vessels.
Performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor to include but not limited to maintaining property and equipment on campus that is utilized by vessel operations or assisting other sections, i.e. the Physical Plant as needed.
Requirements
A high school diploma and four (4) years of experience in the operation of a commercial fishing vessel, military or large private marine vessel.
A 100-ton Masters (Captain's) License and all associated certifications (i.e. first aid, CPR/AED, random drug testing program, etc.)
Qualifications
Ability to demonstrate the ability to pilot and navigate a large (up to 100 tons) ocean going vessel. Knowledge of lifesaving, safety and fire fighting procedures, engine maintenance, commercial fishing or scientific sampling techniques, operation and maintenance of electronic navigation and communication equipment. Ability to lift heavy objects, handling lines and working with power tools. Ability to work in hazardous conditions (e.g., heavy seas, high heat) and working in confined spaces such as engine rooms. Ability to negotiate hatches, ladders and companionways.
