Full Job Description

This individual will serve as the Shellfish Research Section Coordinator and will oversee section research on marine organisms.

Job Duties Include:
  • Overseeing the administration and management of the Shellfish Research Section, including research, budget and personnel management and providing assistance to the MRRI through participation on the MRRI Leadership Team.
  • Conducting research on molluscan shellfish, crustacean shellfish, invasive species and related estuarine habitats/processes as required for new and existing grants, and Agency mandates.
  • Applying for extramural funding for programs and projects related to SCDNR objectives and priorities and initiating research involving molluscan shellfish and invasive species.
  • Preparing manuscripts and technical reports for peer-review publication and presenting findings at national or regional conferences.
  • Serving as a technical resource related to shellfish and invasive species interests for the agency and participating on state and regional committees.
  • Inspecting department issued equipment as necessary to ensure serviceability.

Requirements

A Ph.D. in field related to the job duties and five (5) years of relevant experience.
Writing skills, as evidenced by at least one (1) peer-reviewed publication.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. with at least seven (7) years of postdoctoral research experience in invasive species, shellfish or estuarine ecology and familiarity with bivalve and crustacean management issues. Priority areas of experience in molluscan biology, crustacean biology, invasive species, estuarine processes, ecology, emergent wetlands ecology, and knowledge of fishery management issues and processes. Excellent written/oral skills as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific meetings. Personnel/project management experience and the ability to secure extramural funding. Experience with analysis methods to conduct statistical analyses of small to large datasets. Experience in supervising projects, field and/or laboratory work, data analysis, and personality types, and discretion and confidence in dealing with sensitive issues. Ability to participate in some overnight travel and the capability to work on research vessels and small boats in a variety of weather conditions.
