Job Description

Summary

This job involves working as a scientist or engineer to guide the safe testing, classification, handling, transportation, and storage of explosives, ammunition, and related materials for the U.S. Navy.

You'll provide expert advice to military units, contractors, and others to ensure everything follows safety rules and standards.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, physical science, or chemistry meeting OPM Individual Occupational Requirements
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-11 or NH-02 in testing, hazard classification, handling, transportation, or storage of energetic materials, explosives, ordnance, or ammunition
  • Knowledge of NAVSEAINST 8020.8 and related safety policies for ammunition and explosives
  • Ability to review test data and recommend hazard classifications for safe transport and storage
  • Experience providing technical guidance to military activities, contractors, and private industry
  • Skills in maintaining expertise through professional education, training, and technical liaison
  • Strong coordination and communication abilities with internal/external stakeholders including government, military, and contractors

  • You will support and facilitate production and otherwise contribute to the overall missions, goals and objectives of the NAVORDSAFSECACT (N8) organization.
  • You will provide technical guidance to Navy/Marine Corps activities worldwide as well as private industry involved in DON contracts, for hazard classification of ammunition and explosives as required by NAVSEAINST 8020.8.
  • You will review test data and recommend interim hazard classification for ammunition items and explosives substances to permit safe transportation and storage in accordance with the criteria in NAVSEAINST 8020.8.
  • You will maintain technical expertise for cutting-edge technology through continuing professional education and training, symposiums, and technical liaison with other military activities.
  • You will assist the team leader with team activities, progress, and scheduling to ensure successful project performance.
  • You will coordinate and liaise with internal and external customers across a broad spectrum of government employees, military members, consultants, contractors, other government organizations, or private industry.
