Job Description

Summary

This job involves maintaining and repairing complex electrical and mechanical instruments used in naval operations, such as those that convert mechanical power into electrical signals for monitoring and control.

Workers install, adjust, test, and troubleshoot these devices in a shop or operational setting at a naval base in Hawaii.

It's a good fit for hands-on technicians with strong problem-solving skills and experience in electrical systems who can work independently with minimal supervision.

Key Requirements

  • Ability to perform instrument mechanic duties without more than normal supervision (screen-out element)
  • Experience working with electrical and electro-mechanical instruments, including sensors, computing devices, actuators, and indicators

  • Proficiency in testing instrument operations, analyzing defects, and performing necessary disassembly
  • Expertise in troubleshooting electrically controlled instruments using simulated or actual operating conditions
  • Knowledge and skills equivalent to trade-level qualifications per OPM Job Qualification Handbook for Trades and Labor Occupations
  • Relevant paid or unpaid experience, including volunteer work, demonstrating required competencies

Full Job Description

You will serve as a INSTRUMENT MECHANIC in the PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT(900), ELECTRICAL SHOP (950) of PEARL HARBOR NSY AND IMF.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

  • You will work on a variety of highly complex electrical and electro-mechanical instruments which utilize sensors, computing devices, actuators, and indicators to convert mechanical power into electrical signals.
  • You will install, align, adjust, and modify instruments to standardize or alter the range or purpose of the instrument or to incorporate new features developed since the instrument was manufactured.
  • You will test the operation of instruments, analyze the probable causes of defects, and make necessary disassembly.
  • You will troubleshoot of all types of electrically controlled instruments using simulated signals in an in-shop environment or under actual operating conditions.
