The Department of Management (DOM), Division of Information Technology (DoIT) is seeking an Information Technology Specialist 4 - Database Administrator to join our team!


The successful candidate will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and administration of application servers and web services supporting critical state law enforcement operations.

This position requires expertise in managing complex systems, databases, and application servers, with a focus on ensuring the seamless operation and security of various state and law enforcement applications.


What You Will Do

  • Application Server Management
    1. Administer and maintain associated components on Linux and Oracle Database Appliance servers.
    2. Administer and maintain associated components on Windows or Linux Servers providing Microsoft SQL Databases.
    3. Oversee migration, installation, and deployment of applications and web services.
    4. Configure clusters, managed servers, data sources, and targets for web services deployments.
    5. Monitor deployed web services to ensure availability and troubleshoot issues by analyzing logs and collaborating with developers and end-users.
  • Business Application Support
    1. Maintain and enhance Java-based applications.
    2. Configure and administer database ETL jobs and integrations.
    3. Write SQL queries, stored procedures, and create ad-hoc reports for management analysis and troubleshooting.
  • Database Administration and Troubleshooting
    1. Manage multiple databases ensuring data integrity, performance, and security.
    2. Support database connectivity issues, including resolving problems with native and ODBC drivers.
    3. Install and upgrade Java Development Kits (JDK) on Linux servers to maintain application compatibility.
  • System Administration
    1. Support the reverse proxy servers for secure access to applications.
    2. Manage security certificates, including SSL and Java KeyStore (JKS) configurations.
    3. Plan and execute backup of database and applications.
    4. Support the maintenance of Oracle cloud agents and monitor server environments using Oracle Enterprise Manager.
  • On-Call Support and Miscellaneous Duties
    1. Serve on an after-hours call-back list for on-call support, resolving issues related to databases, Linux systems, and application servers as needed.
    2. Manage server and data migrations, along with system upgrades.

Working Arrangement

This position requires onsite work in Des Moines, IA each week.


Please note, candidates for this position must reside in the state of Iowa at the time of starting the role.


Background Check Requirements

  • After a conditional offer of employment has been made, and as the final step in the hiring process, candidates for this position will be subject to a background investigation, which may include but may not be limited to a verification of a candidate’s education, previous employment/work history, contact of personal references, motor vehicle records, and a criminal history check (including through Federal, State, or Local criminal justice agencies).

  • Pass background investigation conducted by the Iowa Department of Public Safety.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License with the ability to travel statewide as necessary.
  • Attain IOWA System/NCIC Certification within 30 days of employment and maintain certification continuously while employed in this position.

Requirements

079 Linux:
6 months experience, 12 semester hours, or a combination of both that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of Linux Server Administration.

AND

132 Oracle:
6 months experience, 12 semester hours, or a combination of both involving:
• Oracle System Administration including Oracle Database and Oracle Forms and Reports
• Application Server with training in Oracle System Administration I or II
• Oracle Certified Associate/Oracle Certified Professional

AND

139 Database:
6 months experience, 12 semester hours, or a combination of both in: Developing, installing and maintaining database management systems Working in conjunction with the business application process staff to design specific database applications (assure that it can be loaded in and that it works as intended) Developing and enforcing data definition standards to ensure data can be used across work units

Qualifications

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:


**Note: To pass the initial screening, applicants must demonstrate the technical skills listed below:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university and experience equal to two years of full-time work: operating a multi-job computer; installing, operating and coordinating computer based networks; installing/maintaining database management systems; developing business application processes; developing/operating system programs; installing/maintaining personal computers, Local Area Networks and/or servers; managing operating systems; developing/ delivering information management training; providing Information Technology (IT) customer service; or designing/administering Internet sites;
OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting the completion of an approved curriculum/specialized training program developed and implemented by or in cooperation with state government; or eighteen semester hours of accredited post high school course work in one of the specialty areas listed above; or certification by an authorized educational institution/major computer or software producer in an area directly related to one of the specialty areas listed above, for the required education;
OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting one year of the required experience for thirty semester hours of the required education;
OR

employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to six months of full-time work as an Information Technology Specialist 3.
