Job Description

Summary

This job involves assessing and managing workplace health risks in a naval shipyard, such as exposure to chemicals, noise, and other hazards, to keep workers safe.

You'll conduct inspections, develop safety guidelines, and coordinate with other experts to ensure compliance with health standards.

It's a good fit for someone with experience in occupational health who enjoys hands-on problem-solving in a technical, team-oriented environment.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, engineering, or related field meeting OPM basic requirements
  • At least one year of specialized experience at GS-11 level (or equivalent) developing procedures to resolve health hazards and ensure regulatory compliance
  • Experience conducting surveys and investigations of hazards like chemical exposures, noise, equipment operations, and work practices
  • Proficiency in using industrial hygiene equipment such as photoionization detectors, gas detectors, air sampling pumps, noise dosimeters, and radiation monitors
  • Ability to manage major occupational health programs (e.g., asbestos, hearing conservation, respiratory protection)
  • Skills in planning inspections, evaluating controls for hazards, and serving as a liaison with other health professionals

Full Job Description

You will serve as a INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST in the OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH DIVISION - CODE 106.1 of PEARL HARBOR NSY AND IMF.

Salary Ranges: GS:11: $82,218 - $105,613 GS:12: $95,994 - $124,031 GS-12: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the (GS-11) grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: as a professional industrial hygienist, developing criteria, procedures, or instructions to resolve problems involving health hazards to ensure compliance with applicable regulations for the occupational health and safety of shipyard personnel.

Examples of qualifying specialized experience may include: responsibility for programs where workers are exposed to the wide variety of hazards including; chemical, physical, biological; conducting industrial hygiene sampling using; photoionization detectors, gas detectors, air sampling pumps, noise dosimetry, velocity meters, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation monitors, or other state of the art monitoring equipment.

GS-11: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the (GS-9) grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: as a professional industrial hygienist, conducting surveys or investigations of shipyard work operations to identify and evaluate conditions that may be hazardous to the occupational health and safety of personnel.

Examples of qualifying specialized experience may include conducting surveys or investigations of the following: Chemical exposures and/or overexposures; Noise exposures and/or overexposures; Equipment and/or machine operations; Environmental conditions; Work practices; and Protective equipment.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Major Duties:

  • You will effectively manage two or more major occupational health programs, such as asbestos, hearing conservation, paint, respiratory protection, toxic metals or ventilation.
  • You will prepare and issue procedures, instructions and other guidance concerning industrial health programs and related stressors.
  • You will plan, direct or conduct detailed surveys and investigations related to the recognition, evaluation and control of industrial health hazards for specific programs.
  • You will be a professional liaison with the industrial hygienists of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery Command and other Naval Shipyards to coordinate efforts to implement industrial health protections of the Shipyard workforce.
  • You will conduct inspections of worksites to observe work practices and environmental conditions for hazards to health and safety, and to detect violations of published health standards.
  • You will evaluate the adequacy of controls for health hazards in initial and final plans and specifications for facility construction, alteration and repair, as well as modification or relocation of processes.
