Note: Actual salary includes locality pay (15-40%+ depending on location).

Job Description

Summary

This job involves evaluating workplace safety in a naval medical setting, identifying health risks like hazardous materials and noise, and recommending ways to protect workers through better ventilation, procedures, or equipment changes.

A good fit would be someone with experience in occupational health who enjoys assessing environments, advising teams on safety issues, and ensuring compliance with health standards in a structured government role.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of experience at GS-09 level (for GS-11) or GS-11 level (for GS-12) in federal or equivalent service
  • Knowledge of industrial hygiene principles to manage full programs and assess occupational hazards
  • Ability to devise control measures for ventilation, shielding, material substitution, and work procedures
  • Experience evaluating health hazards, including those not fully understood, and analyzing sampling results against standards
  • Familiarity with federal, state, DoD, and Navy occupational health laws, policies, and regulations
  • Skills in providing consultation on occupational health problems and drafting policy/guidance for safety professionals
  • Ability to review facility plans for construction/renovation to incorporate engineering controls for hazards

Experience assisting in the evaluation occupational health hazards to include those for which the nature and extent of hazards is not completely understood.

Experience drafting industrial hygiene policy and guidance for occupational health and safety professionals.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices carrying out all industrial hygiene programs for a command.

Experience with federal, state, Department of Defense (DoD), and department of the Navy (DON) occupational health laws, policies, regulations, guidelines, methodologies, and objectives in the development and implementation of a region-wide industrial hygiene program.

Experience devising control measures for ventilation, shielding, material, substitution, and change in work procedures.

Experience providing consultation and advice to activities on occupational health problems and concerns, when requested.

Experience drafting industrial hygiene policy and guidance for occupational health and safety professionals.

  • You will assess work practices to identify the population at risk and to detect violations of public health standards.
  • You will provide consultation and advice to activities on occupational health problems and concerns.
  • You will review facility plans for new construction, renovation and modification of existing structures for appropriate engineering controls to control hazardous materials, noise and physical hazards.
  • You will evaluate the results of sampling performed by themselves, other industrial hygienists or industrial hygiene technicians to statistically determine if occupational exposure are in excess of published health standards.
