This position is located in the Engineering Service at VA Long Beach Healthcare System - Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center in Long Beach, CA.
The Industrial Equipment Mechanic is responsible for dismantling, overhauling, repairing, relocating, modifying, maintaining, aligning, installing, preventative maintenance, and fabricating parts for portable and stationary mechanical equipment PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Industrial equipment mechanics frequently handle objects weighing 45 pounds and occasionally carry objects weighing 45 pounds and over for considerable distances.
They are required to push, pull, reach, walk, stand, crawl, kneel, bend, and work in cramped positions over and under machinery of all types for sustained periods of time.
Incumbent performs work in areas that are minimally lighted, ventilated, and heated. Floor and deck surfaces are sometimes uneven, oily, and slippery.
They are frequently exposed to moving objects and sharp edges with the possibility of cuts and bruises, and to noise and vibration from machines.
Occasionally they climb and work from ladders and scaffolding exposing the repairers to the possibility of severe injury from slipping and falling.
Dirt, grease, and dampness are frequently encountered. Various protective devices such as hard hats, gloves, safety shoes, and glasses are used.
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.

Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1).

All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.

Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to: Dismantling, overhauling, repairing, relocating, modifying, maintaining, aligning, installing, performing preventative maintenance, and fabricating parts for portable and stationary mechanical equipment, which include dietetics Equipment, Indirect Patient Care Equipment, Environmental Management Equipment, Grounds Maintenance Equipment, Heavy Equipment, Emergency Management Equipment, and Engineering Industrial Equipment Following guidance for the accomplishment of work is provided using manufacturer specifications, instructions and blueprints, verbal instructions and a thorough knowledge of trade practices Installing equipment including anchoring to foundations, to include alignment and balance when needed Evaluating and determining malfunction of problem areas of more complex equipment Repairing and modifying equipment to meet required standard and performances Maintaining a fleet of gasoline powered vehicles operated by the facility's Grounds Department Ensuring compliance with VA Directives and written Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for Annual Certification of Facility Equipment by a factory-trained technician Scheduling and coordinating any contracted major service or maintenance activities and obtaining all reports and service/repair orders Accomplishing maintenance and repairs to equipment critical medical centers mission as needed Performing other related duties as assigned to the Mechanical and Pipefitting Unit Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 07:00 a.m.
