Full Job Description

The Tibor Rubin V Medical Center is recruiting for one (1) Industrial Equipment Mechanic located in the Engineering Service, Maintenance and Operations Section, Mechanics Shop and reports directly to the Maintenance Supervisor.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.

Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair Interpret Instructions, Specifications (includes blueprint reading) Materials Troubleshooting Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Without more than normal supervision Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.

Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.

Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Major Duties:

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Assembly, installation, maintenance, repair, modification and fabrication of parts for portable and stationary mechanical equipment, including: housekeeping equipment such as vacuums, floor buffers and electric pallet jacks; grounds maintenance equipment such as lawn mowers, generators, pumps and motors; emergency management equipment such as enclosed trailers and portable kitchens; dietetics equipment such as food carts, ovens, steamers, conveyer systems and dishwashers and indirect patient care equipment such as wheelchairs, electric beds and stainless-steel carts.

Use of manufacturer specifications, instructions and blueprints, verbal instructions and a thorough knowledge of trade practices.

Maintain and repair clothes washers/dryers and associated exhaust duct work located throughout the Medical Center.

Service and maintain the facility's fleet of approximately 89 electric-powered service vehicles and patient passenger shuttles as well as a fleet of gasoline powered vehicles operated by the facility Grounds Department.

Service and maintenance of all, permanently installed safe patient handling lifts, throughout the hospital.

Work with the Contracting Officer Representative (COR) to ensure compliance with VA Directives and written Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for Annual Certification of patient lifts by a factory ­trained technician.

Schedule and coordinate any contracted major service or maintenance activities and obtain all reports and service/repair orders. Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
