Key Requirements

  • Journey-level experience as a refrigeration mechanic or steamfitter, including completion of a recognized apprenticeship or at least five years of applicable work (up to two years substitutable with vocational training)
  • Two years as a Maintenance Mechanic 1 or three years of general experience in building/equipment maintenance, construction, or repair (for entry at Maintenance Mechanic 2 level with in-training path)
  • Ability to perform preventative maintenance, repairs, and installations on HVAC systems, including direct expansion refrigeration
  • Skills in inspecting, maintaining, installing, and repairing electrical equipment, circuits, and components
  • Proficiency in maintaining and repairing mechanical systems, including plumbing, piping, potable water, and waste systems

HVAC Technician

HVAC Technician

This recruitment is open on an internal basis for permanent state employees within the Washington Military Department.

This position works under the general supervision of the Maintenance Specialist 4 and is a fully qualified HVAC Technician responsible for performing journey level maintenance work required to accomplish all phases of building maintenance and construction work.

In-Training Option: This in-training position offers a career path and on-the-job training and allows you to progress to achieve the goal class of HVAC Technician.

The goal class for this position is an HVAC Technician. We will consider applicants who meet the requirements for the Maintenance Mechanic 2 and HVAC Technician levels. If the finalist meets the requirements of the Maintenance Mechanic 2, they will be appointed at that level and will be placed into an in-training program to become a HVAC Technician within a specific period of time utilizing the in-training program.

Requirements


Responsibilities include:

Perform professional level maintenance, repair and upgrades of facility Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems.
  • Preventative maintenance of HVAC systems scheduled through Recurring Work Program (RWP) work orders.
  • Service, repair, and install direct expansion refrigeration systems.
  • Operate and maintain computerized Energy Management Control Systems (EMCS).
Inspect, maintain, install and repair electrical equipment, devices and sub-components.
  • Preventative maintenance of electrical equipment and systems.
  • Maintain, repair, and install electrical circuits and components.
Inspect, maintain, install and repair mechanical systems.
  • Preventative maintenance of potable water, drain and waste systems, plumbing fixtures and appliances.
  • Maintain, repair, and install piping systems and components directly supporting HVAC equipment.
  • Maintain, repair, and install plumbing systems and components.
Provide HVAC related expertise to support federal construction and repair programming and other facility operations.
  • Support HVAC related contracted construction and repair.

Qualifications


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

At the Maintenance Mechanic 2 level - Pay Range 47G ($4,740- $5,501/month):
  • Two years of experience as a Maintenance Mechanic 1, OR
  • Three years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or building repair work.
At the HVAC Technician level - Pay Range 50E ($4,865 - $5,929/month):
Journey-level standing as refrigeration mechanic or steamfitter as attested by one of the options below:
  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in refrigeration or steamfitter trades.
  • Full journey-level status in a Plumbers and Pipefitters Union.
  • Five years of applicable experience in the refrigeration or steamfitter trades or a combination of the two. Vocational or trade school training as a steamfitter or refrigeration mechanic will substitute, year-for-year, for work experience up to a maximum of two years.
  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Certification:
  • 06 Electrical License.
  • Universal CFC Recovery Certificate.
Knowledge of:
  • Industry standards of workmanship and practices, materials, tools and equipment used in mechanical trades and HVAC work, occupational hazards and safety practices of construction and maintenance trades.
Skills, Abilities, and Competencies to:
  • Read, interpret, and upgrade building plans and electric schematic drawings.
  • Interpret and understand building structural, mechanical, and electrical plans.
  • Take action to learn and grow.
  • Take action to meet the needs of others.

Additional Information


Compensation: Wage/salary depends on qualifications or rules of promotion.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Background Investigation:
Must successfully complete the appropriate background checks required for employment and to obtain/maintain a DoD Common Access Card (CAC) in order to obtain/maintain a DoD Secret-level security clearance. Must be willing to sign releases of information and shall not have access to any investigative materials and files. The processing of background checks can take up to six months post-employment. Failure to successfully pass a background check may be cause for termination.

Driver's License:

  1. Valid to drive in the State of Washington.
  2. Must meet requirements of the REAL ID Act. This is required for base access and will be required upon hire.

Military Facility: Willingness to work on a Military Controlled Access Installation.
Camp Murray utilizes the Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) for entry to the installation. Must meet access requirements / background check which can be found in the Camp Murray Access Requirements Policy (Unified Policy No. 18-01). This includes possession of an Enhanced Driver’s License, or other REAL ID Compliant Identification.

Work Hours: The standard work schedule will be Monday - Thursday (4/10 schedule) 6:00am - 4:30pm.

Telework: This position is not eligible for telework.

Emergency Assignment: Upon activation of the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) or Joint Field Office (JFO), incumbent may be required to work in an alternate location with rotating shifts, including weekends and evenings, in a highly stressful and fast-paced environment.

Travel: Occasional statewide travel may be required up to 5% to include overnight stays.
