Summary

This job involves maintaining and repairing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, boilers, chillers, and related equipment at the Seattle Center's facilities to keep buildings comfortable and operational.

It's a hands-on role on a team that handles everything from routine inspections to emergency fixes.

A good fit would be someone with practical experience in HVAC maintenance and a required steam engineer's license, who enjoys technical troubleshooting in a stable government position.

Key Requirements

  • Current City of Seattle Grade II Steam Engineers License (or Grade III with commitment to obtain Grade II within six months)
  • Two years of experience in operating and maintaining HVACR systems, or equivalent technical school coursework
  • Ability to operate, maintain, and repair high-pressure boilers, centrifugal chillers, and associated equipment
  • Skills in troubleshooting and repairing A/C units, heat pumps, valves, pumps, and air compressors
  • Experience with HVAC computerized control systems, chemical testing for boilers and cooling towers, and back-up diesel generators

Seattle Center, Technical Facilities Management Division, is seeking full-time HVAC Technicians to welcome into our dynamic team!

About this position:

The HVAC Technician position is part of a team responsible for operating and maintaining the Seattle Center boilers, chillers, heat pumps, AC units, plus all Air Handling Units and mixing boxes in the buildings and facilities.

This HVAC Engineering unit is part of the Division of Technical Facilities Management. This position reports to the HVAC Crew Chief.

A City of Seattle Grade II Steam License is REQUIRED; however, we are accepting applications from applicants with a Grade III City of Seattle Steam Engineers license, with the condition that they must obtain a City of Seattle Grade II Steam Engineers license, within six months of employment.

Requirements


  • Operate, maintain, and repair central plant high pressure, fire tube boilers, and low-pressure package boilers and both steam and hot water associated equipment.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair two central plant Centrifugal Chillers and associated equipment.
  • Perform inspections, installation, repair, and preventive maintenance on existing equipment including valves, pumps, air compressors and associated equipment
  • Troubleshoot and repair A/C Units, Heat pumps and appliances.
  • Operate, install, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC computerized control system.
  • Operate and maintain back-up diesel generator systems
  • Monitor and reset fire control panels.
  • Repair and maintain hydraulic systems on compactors and truck ramps.
  • Monitor and record readings of all equipment, prepare maintenance records of repair work.
  • Respond to routine emergency calls.
  • Perform, chemical test and treatment for boilers, cooling towers and Hydronic and chilled water loop systems.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:


  • A current City of Seattle Grade II Steam Engineers License.
  • Requires two years of experience in the operation and maintenance of HVACR systems or two years of technical school HVACR coursework (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).

  • Work experience in maintaining and operating digital control systems


License, Certification, and Other Requirements:


  • A current City of Seattle Grade II Steam Engineers License
  • A valid Washington State Driver License
  • Ability to obtain a City of Seattle Refrigeration Operator’s License within 90 days of employment


Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Stand, walk, climb, climb ladders, bend for extended periods of time.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs. (up to 75 lbs. with assistance) safely and effectively.
  • Working at heights and in restricted areas using precautions and attention to safety procedures/equipment.
  • Exposure to excessive noise and requires taking safety precautions around equipment.
  • Seattle Center is a 24/7 – 365 day per year operation. HVAC Technicians work various shifts, including days, nights, weekends and holidays.

How to Apply:


The full pay range for this step-progression position is $69.13 - $74.80 per hour. New employees begin at Step 1 of the pay progression, which is $69.13 hourly. Current City employees’ starting rate of pay will be based on Personnel Rules regarding promotions.
