Summary

This entry-level Human Resources Specialist role in the U.S.

Department of Justice involves supporting everyday HR tasks like helping with hiring new staff, managing employee records, processing payroll, and answering basic questions about pay and benefits.

Key Requirements

GS-7: To be eligible at the GS-7 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below: Specialized Experience, Education, a combination of Education and Experience, OR Superior Academic Achievement.

Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in federal service.

Specialized experience is defined as performing administrative work which demonstrates a basic knowledge of human resources principles, concepts and practices.

Examples of specialized experience include: assisting with recruitment, hiring, security packages, and the onboarding process of new employees; preparing and processing personnel/payroll actions; performing human resources records management duties; and providing routine human resources information to employees, (e.g., pay, leave, benefits, etc.).

Education: One of the following types of education in a closely related field (e.g., Human Resources): One full year of graduate education in a closely related field OR a Bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement (SSA): SAA is defined as (1) cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 for all completed undergraduate courses, or those completed in the last 2 years of undergraduate study; (2) GPA of 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 for all courses in your major field of study, or those courses in your major completed in the last two years; (3) Rank in the upper one-third of your class in the college, university, or major subdivision; or (4) Membership in a national honor society (other than freshman honor societies).

Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.

Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.

If your agency has notified you in writing that you are a displaced employee eligible for ICTAP consideration, you may receive selection priority if: 1) this vacancy is within your ICTAP eligibility; 2) you apply under the instructions in the announcement; and 3) you are found well-qualified for this vacancy.

At the full performance level, you will provide a variety of human resources (HR) management services in two or more of the following functional areas: recruitment and placement, position classification, employee relations and performance management, employee benefits, and human resources development.

If selected, you will receive formal and/or on-the-job training as needed.

Duties include: Performing position analysis to determine organizational requirements Determining recruitment strategies and posting job announcements Reviewing applications and applying qualification standards Providing advice and assistance on performance management Providing assistance in the administration of benefits programs Administering guidance on pay and leave Identifying training and development needs Conducting evaluations of human resource program operations Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
