Job Description

Summary

This entry-level Human Resources Assistant role in the Department of Defense involves supporting hiring programs, organizing documents for official reviews, and creating written reports and materials.

Full Job Description

This position was established at less than the full-performance level for recruitment and training purposes.

Upon successful completion of training, demonstrated ability to perform duties at the higher level, and possible audit verification of the level of work performed, the incumbent may be promoted without further competition to the next higher level.

The full performance level (FPL) of this position is GS-08. In order to qualify for this position, you must meet the requirements described below.

You may qualify at the GS-07 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (experience may have been gained in the private sector) that demonstrates your ability to: 1.

Assist with the administration of the Priority Placement Program (PPP) and other special hiring programs.; AND 2.

Gather and organize documentation for formal inquiries (e.g., FOIA, EEO, program audits), performing an initial review to flag potentially sensitive or conflicting information.; AND 3.

Develop and prepare a variety of written materials such as formal letters, position papers, reports, staff studies, staff summary packages, briefings, charts, and background papers.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

A "certification" letter should be on letterhead of the appropriate military branch of the service and contain (1) the military service dates including the expected discharge or release date; and (2) the character of service.

This "certification" must include your rank, dates of active duty service, type of discharge and character of service (i.e. honorable), and date any terminal leave will begin.

It must be signed by, or by direction of, the adjutant, personnel officer, or commander of your unit or higher headquarters.

Active duty members that fail to provide a valid "certification" of service with their initial application will be found "not eligible".

Members may be appointed before the effective date of their military retirement/separation if they are on terminal leave.

Current or Former Political Appointees: Agencies must seek prior approval from OPM before they can appoint a current or recent political appointee to a competitive or non-political excepted service position at any level.

Incumbent typical work assignments may include the following: Analyze and resolve difficult but recurring procedural problems and factual discrepancies in position descriptions and evaluation statements.

Independently review positions that have unusual circumstances, such as those with overlapping duties from different functional areas or those impacted by minor reorganizations.

Process a wide range of classification-related personnel actions and maintain data with the Defense Civilian Personnel Data System (DCPDS).
