Summary

This job involves operating small trucks and equipment to haul materials for road maintenance, performing hands-on tasks like repairing potholes, building drainage structures, and clearing areas along highways.

It also includes directing traffic during repairs and helping out during emergencies or bad weather, often requiring long hours outdoors.

A good fit would be someone physically strong who enjoys manual work, has a basic driver's license, and is willing to get a commercial driver's license quickly.

Full Job Description

Operates small equipment such as standard dump truck and flatbed trucks for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials and debris. Performs manual labor in building catch basins, pouring concrete for curbs and raised median, laying pipes for driveways and other drainage structures, repairing shoulders, clearing right-of-ways. Repairs potholes and base surface failures of roadway using hand tools such as shovel, pick, rake and asphalt lute to level asphalt as needed. Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow to protect workers, general public and equipment. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, may include being available for extended working hours.

Requirements

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.

Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.

May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.

Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
