Job Description

Summary

This job involves operating medium-sized trucks and equipment to haul materials and perform hands-on maintenance on state highways and bridges, including tasks like repairing roads and setting up safe work zones.

It also requires helping with traffic control, flagging, and responding to emergencies or bad weather, often with long hours outdoors.

A good fit would be someone physically fit with experience in manual labor or equipment operation who holds or can quickly get a commercial driver's license and doesn't mind tough working conditions.

Full Job Description

Operates medium duty equipment including a tandem dump truck for pulling a trailer and hauling materials such as asphalt, dirt, limestone, etc., to and from job sites. Performs skilled manual labor and operates small equipment such as asphalt kettle, standard dump truck, roller, brine sprayer, forklift, snow plow, tractor with mower, brush chipper, spreader, concrete mixer and self-contained sweeper, powered tools, and hand tools to perform a variety of maintenance activities associated with the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system. Assists with the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone. Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones. Assists with emergency and inclement weather operations, may include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts.

Requirements

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.

Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.

May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.

Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
